Movie Info

A young yokai (specter) who lost his parents at birth wages war against the malevolent monsters that threaten humankind in a fantasy horror film directed by Katsuhide Motaki and starring Eiji Wentz. With the help of his father's soul (which lives in one of his eyeballs), the young warrior stands as the sole barrier between the fragile human race and the nightmarish beasts that populate another dimension. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Audience Reviews for Gegege no Kitarô (Kitaro)

A manga anime adaptation that is just good clean family fun. If you've seen the movie Mirrormask, just take that and add more humor, more interesting characters, and tone it down for a younger audience. Bingo. This is Kitaro. As in most fantasy movies, the story is good and entertaining. Fit and understandable for all ages. It moves at a pretty quick pace too, so there is never a dull moment. There were some places where the film did feel a bit rushed though. These parts could have used more explanation and/or dialogue. As previously mentioned, this film is made for all ages. The humor is for everyone as well. It will be easy for young kids to laugh at the jokes and characters in this film. I find it hard not to laugh when you have character names like Neko Musume (Cat Girl), Nezumi Otoko (Rat Man), Sunakake Babaa (Sand Witch), and Konaki Jijii (Crying Man) just to name a few. Some of them look just as funny as their names as well. The acting is fantastic. Some of the actors seem to go a little over the top with their characters, but it still works nicely with this film. Yo Oizumi does a nice job, albeit a little annoying at times, as Nezumi Otoko (Rat Man) and Satoshi Hashimoto is great as Kuko (Nine Tailed Fox). I also enjoyed the beautiful Rena Tanaka as Neko Musume (Cat Girl). This film uses a lot of CG and some of it is pretty good while the rest of it is pretty cheap looking. But, with the way this film plays out, it shouldn't bother you all that much. This isn't The Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter, so there is no need for top of line CG, although it doesn't hurt. This is definitely a great film for the family to gather around and watch, but is also great for fans of fantasy and sci-fi. This is highly recommended for fans of Mirrormask and The Great Yokai War, among others.
