Major Motoko Kusanagi is a beautiful cyborg who works for Section 29, Japan's secret police force, in the year 2029. Motoko's supervisor, Aramaki, orders her to find Puppet Master, a sinister computer terrorist created by a rival organization. Helping her is fellow cyborg Bateau and the almost entirely human agent Togusa. If you try focusing on the plot particulars, Ghost is frustrating and, despite the gunfire, not entirely dramatic. But as a piece of dark art, it's substantial and successful.

Ghost in the Shell is another 'Japanamation' feature, with a science-fiction story that is a bit more interesting than most, though it is also overly complicated and occasionally confusing.

Mamoru Oshii's direction deftly merges gritty realism with a dreamlike quality.

I enjoyed its visuals, its evocative soundtrack (including a suite for percussion and heavy breathing), and its ideas.
