Hasbro Issues Message to G.I. Joe Fans
by Jeff Giles | November 06, 2007

Summary

There have been a lot of rumors regarding the Paramount/Hasbro-produced live-action G.I Joe movie, and we've had fun discussing many of them -- but Hasbro, apparently, hasn't been enjoying the gossip as much as the rest of us. Back to Article

Also, don't forget that the US (despite it's flaws) is the greatest most generous country in the history of the human race. Also, step outside the country yourself sometime and you will find the US is the most idolized country in the world. Even as far as Albania you see kids wearing the red white and blue. So our enemies still hate us, oh well. I for one think our military US men and woman are heroes and should be treated as such. That was the origin of the GI Joe line and that's how it should stay. I appreciate traveling and enjoying foreign cultures. How about keeping some of our own culture alive? Pretty soon apple pie and baseball will be gone as well.

I can appreciate attempts to save aspects of our own culture, but I don't think people getting pissed over the Joes being international really care about that. Their agenda is one of nationalism (not to be confused with patriotism) and xenophobia. They want an exclusively Norman Rockwell America with no influence from outside cultures. They don't want to understand other cultures, even the ones that are good (and make no mistake about, there are good and evil cultures). The "international Joes" is just porn for these people, as it gives them an excuse to spout their rhetoric and preach to their supporters.

The way I see it, this is a good idea. Different cultures coming together to stop a group they ALL hate--Cobra--is a good message and a relevant one too. Besides, it's not like all the members of Cobra were non-Americans. In fact, a large deal of the members DID seem to be American.

The American way is to embrace cultures and spread freedom throughout the world. The GI Joe ideal was that of American Heroes fighting for freedom and ending terrorism. The GI Joe's even teamed up with special forces from other countries during the cold war (like the Russians October Guard). The Joe team consisted of all races much like the US. They were also all of America's best. Cobra also consisted of many races and was formed in the US. Why not keep it that way. Shouldn't some American fiction contain US heroes and US villians? That seems like a fresh idea to me.

The US military isn't perfect but their track record is a lot better than the UN. The UN has mostly stood by and let Aids and Malaria wreak havoc in Africa... they are not heroes in my book.

Bull****. The "American way" is to piss on the little guy and other cultures while taking there money and making you think we're helping. And most generous my ***! We are so generous we are still trying to clean up katrina. Charity starts at home. How can we help others and we can't get our own **** together. No one is saying thats there is not any US heroes in the damn movie just that the whole team isn't american. And the military isn't the problem. The military is a weapon and the one who weilds it is that retarded monkey-child aka darth vader aka bush jr and the freakin Emporer himself (cheney). I love america but don't act like spreading freedom is american. What is american is running to freedom on your own accord. The statue of liberty says "bring us you poor..." not "We'll come take over if your poor". And Who the hell are we to say someone elses ways are wrong. Right now the American way is eating and watching the idiot tube while outsourcing because its cheaper. Anyway, I hope they have a kickass GI ninja vs cobra ninja fight.

Oh and the UN record may not be great but at least they did as a team (sound familiar) rather than blowing smoke up peoples *** to gain false support for a war on an never ending taget (terror). Just like the war on drugs, it will never end because as long as people exsist there is going to be differences, which lead to disputes, which lead to people feeling hurt, which leads to retaliation, which is definded by the one being attacked as terrorism.

Isn't America fighting enough wars that we don't need to start making movies about fake ones? Or are we trying to give the President an alternative to invading Iran.

Bush: "Snakes."
Entire Cabinet: "Snakes? Sir...?"
Bush: "That's right. Snakes, Cobras to be exact. They hate us for our freedom, and
they are totally creepy. Some can even spit venom, and we can't let any foreign
power posses weapons of that magnitude."
Entire Cabinet: (to each other) "Will we get fired if we say anything? Shut up stupid,
just nod and agree. (Out loud) Sir, intelligence indicates that there are
snakes in Iran."
Cheney: "Groovy."

Ok, what nation in history has given more than the US? Also, which country would you
rather live in?

By the way in regards to your Katrina remarks...thousands of Americans have been coming from all over the nation to help rebuild and put the Coast together. I went there myself to help and even with thousands and thousands of volunteers it will still take another 10 years for life to be normal there. The American people are generous and giving and despite your brainwashing the majority of the people in this country are good people.

Nobody likes war and I am not a fan of Bush either but I don't see how he can be a retarded Monkey and an evil genius at the same time.

FIRST OFF: TAKE IT EASY, ITS'S JUST A DAMN MOVIE BASED OFF A CARTOON ABOUT MULTI-ETHNIC AMERICAN SOLDIERS FIGHTING TERRORISTS AND NO ONE EVER GOT KILLED TO MY RECOLECTION!
SECONDLY: FOR THOSE OF YOU THAT CALL AMERICA AN EVIL EMPIRE AND THROW OUT UNRESEARCHED "FACTS" ABOUT THE HEINOUS CRIMES AMERICAN IS RESPONSIBLE FOR BITE ME!
THIRDLY: IF YOUR GONNA HARP ON ABOUT HOW BAD AMERICA IS, TRAVEL ABROAD AND "LIVE" IN OTHER COUNTRIES FOR A WHILE BEFORE YOU HAVE THE AUDACITY TO MAKE SUCH VENOMOUS REMARKS (NO PUN INTENDED)

People, for those of you here that are Americans please use the free speech granted to you by your country more resoponsibly. Ignorance is no excuse.

I'm 30 years old, i actually watched the original cartoons when they were on television,
and own a good portion of the comics.
Some things you all may not know...

1. Duke was the original leader of G.I.Joe. It wasnt until season 2 that they brought in General Hawk. They probably wont use alot of Season 2 characters, and will focus on season 1. G.I.Joe 2 will maybe have the season 2 guys..

2. Transformers was the same thing... a cartoon from the 80's with a large enough fan base, and interest that they made a live action movie. We all know how that movie is doing on the all-time sales charts... G.I. Joe was, arguably, even more popular then Transformers. In the 80's, and throughout the years...

3. The movie, Tranformers used only 1 voice actor from the original cartoon(as far as i know), Peter Cullen, the voice of Optimus Prime. If any of you are like me, you will want the voices of Duke, Cobra Commander, Destro, The Baroness, Zartan, Shipwreck, Dusty, and the rest of them to be the well known voices we have come to love.. Watch the cartoons, they all have their distinct, loveable voices..From my web research, The man who voiced Cobra Commander(also StarScream in the Transformers cartoon) died in the 90's. Will they allow the actors to use their own voices, or wil the try to mirror the original voices? Perhaps they will enlist a good majority of the voice actors from the original cartoon. Look up voice actors and G.IJoe, you'd be suprised at how many of them still work today in cartoons and video games.
Maybe im making too big of an issue on their voices, but ALL of these well known characters must have their original voices. How that works with a live action movie, its hard to say...

4. G.I. Joe worked with the UN, alot. They are their own force however. In the cartoons, they didnt work with the U.N. as often as in the comics. Either way, that should'nt really matter in the scheme of things.

5. The premise, "Real American Hero" as well as the cartoon, the toys, and comics, all came in the 80's, during the Cold war. Ronald Reagan was president, Rocky was popular, Born in the USA rocked the music charts, and patriotism was at an all time high.
If its going to be a modern G.I.Joe and Cobra, perhaps Cobra uses this modern world view of the United States to its advantage.

6. As quoted from Entertainment Weekly magazine, "Paramount though, asked Stuart Beattie to dash out a script for G.I. Joe-one of the studios planned 2009 tentpoles-in just seven weeks. "Oh God, no, you cant write a film like that in seven weeks," he says, nervous about launching a franchise on a rushed draft. "A year and a half would have been good." Later in the paragragh... "Unless Peter Jackson is planning to let his actors improvise all of the film Tintin or Michael Bay can shoot Transformers 2 without any plot or dialogue(hey, it worked for the first one), they may have to wait until 2010."

So, finally, a rushed script, a live action movie with actors, (not the original voice actors that we have come to know and love), and much speculation, could spell doom to this project. And you wonder why it took so long. The idea has been floating around for over 20 years. After the success of Transformers, someone felt the time was right.
All I can say is the characters better have their voices that we have come to know and love, and not real voices from todays actors. Unless they can acuratly get the voices mimiced, the movie wil be a flop in my eyes..

the entertainment weekly quote is from an article about the writers strike. A bunch of movies scripts were probably pushed out before the strike began.

This is true of any country, it's called reality. Quite a few countries have interests in seeing the US decline in power, hence they play the "can't we all get along" card and act as if they believe the I am a citizen of the world bull**** that most ignorant liberal american's believe in. If it was China in the mid-east, we would be on the flipside suckeling at the U.N.'s teat.
