G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra explodes into theaters this weekend, and fanboys everywhere are wringing their hands in anxiety. Reactions to another certain robotic Hasbro toy franchise's film adaptations have been mixed in recent years, in part because of the liberties that have been taken with the characters and their distinct appearances. With this in mind, we here at RT decided it would be worth a walk down memory lane to see how the Joes of the big screen matched up with their action figure and cartoon doppelgangers. Join us as we briefly examine the similarities (or lack thereof) between Hawk, Destro, and the rest of the major players in The Rise of Cobra with the toy line -- created in the 60s but popularized in the 80s -- that inspired them.
General Hawk - Dennis Quaid
Dennis Quaid's General Hawk is pretty close to the classic 1986 action figure design, with the camouflage pants and the loosely fitting gun belt tilted to the side. He probably didn't have to mimic the toy's constipated posture, though; everyone knows General Hawk farts where he damn well pleases.
Duke - Channing Tatum
No one embodied "A Real American Hero" like Duke, who was so awesome in action that they gave him the most boring uniform. And who better to play the Joe poster boy than Channing Tatum? I mean, just look at the hair, the sideways glance, the lack of any visible neck. He's like a Ken doll in khakis, which is basically what Duke represents.
Ripcord - Marlon Wayans
The Rise of Cobra Ripcord is significantly different from classic Ripcord in many ways, from the size of his role to his uniform to his, er, ethnicity. It's a good thing nobody really remembers the original Ripcord, though, because they might have been put off by his transformation from Star Trek android lookalike into Little Man.
Snake Eyes - Ray Park
Alright, this one is pretty spot-on, but let's be honest. The original version of Snake Eyes was so cool to begin with, there wasn't much they could have done to make him even more awesome. Except for maybe casting Ray "Darth Maul" Park in the role. Which they did.
Scarlett - Rachel Nichols
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say the casting director did a magnificent job nabbing Rachel Nichols for Scarlett, considering the action figure looks like a pacified Edward Norton with cone boobs. The film version of the uniform is the standard black G.I. Joe body armor, but honestly, in this case, who's complaining?
Breaker - Said Taghmaoui
While the brown hair and mustache are still there, the Michael McDonald beard is gone, and the Southern accent has been replaced by an Arab one. The new Breaker is from Morocco, where Robocop suits and hi-tech monocles are all the rage.
Heavy Duty - Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje
A backwards neon green baseball cap, matching camo pants, a tattered sleeveless shirt, and space boots? That's so 80s, amiright? Let's throw some black armor on him and put him behind a ginormous Gatling gun. Oh, and let's make him British while we're at it. Nothing helps shed the image of a backwards baseball cap like a British accent.

ARTaylor writes: on Aug 04 2009 10:19 AM I'm kind of hopeful for the movie. I'm just worried that the Power Ranger suits are going to ruin the movie for me. They seem too over the top and silly. G.I. Joe always seemed to be about real people doing superheroic things. Giving them suits so they jump over missiles is like giving Batman real batwings or Punisher able to superjump. (Reply to this) |

Jack Waters writes: on Aug 04 2009 10:27 AM In reply to this comment (#2533130) Sorry, but Sarah Palin with laser guns is waaaaaaaay too hot to hate! I like that this new film has added some diversity to the characters. For instance making Breaker into an Arab(if this were the 90s the Arabs would be the bad guys and all fit into the steretype of being a terrorist, not that I'm really complaining even I love True Lies and hate people who complain about it). Also making Heavy Duty british and making Ripcord African American. They probably just did it for international appeal, but I think it helps the film out a lot giving positive examples of different races(mainly Arabs). @CodeClearenceBlue: ya, Cobra Commander looks pretty awful. I hope they change the look in the inevitable sequels. (Reply to this) |

gm1200 writes: on Aug 04 2009 10:39 AM Seriously, what part of original Destro would have not worked here? Kids would've thought it was cool and the change for the serious certainly won't sway any adult who isn't already a fan... Oh yeah...and agreed on Commander...looks idiotic... Geeze I hope this movie doesn't suck. (Reply to this) |

rizzyh writes: on Aug 04 2009 10:50 AM Man, i was never really a GI Joe's fan, but i remember the cartoon/action figure look of Cobra Commander from waaay back in the day (1990) and thought he was one of the coolest villains i had ever seen. Is it just me, or does he now look a little like he's wearing a bondage mask? The tight leather isn't really helping either. God, i hope Joseph Gordon Levitt can pull it off. (Reply to this) |

TombstoneLawDog writes: on Aug 04 2009 11:20 AM Viva Dr. Mindbender! ...okay, but seriously; The ad campaigns are getting a little more serious for this thing, lending it a *slightly* less horrible-seeming air of possible non-suckness. The costumes for the chicks are irrelevant but AWESOME, the costumes for the guys are just irrelevant, except for Destro and CC'r. --both costumes, I might add, make this entire production seem silly. Oooh, Destro is 'respectable!' ..well, not really. Christopher Eccleston is about as-- F##k it, IS--Lord Voldemort in a skinny black suit without his powers, but ROCKIN' the evil brit accent and puffy 'do. Wow. Live in fear, Joes. Oooh, Cobra Commander is... in a skull-sized rebreather? face-humping a fish bowl? Joseph G-Levitt has the BEST of both worlds, here- he gets all the benefits if this wanna-be franchise does well and the plausible deniability if it tanks. "What? Oh, I didn't really want to be associated with this anyway, which is why I wore the mask!" kudos on the comments, though. Good description of the dolls! (Reply to this) |

opTIMus Nerd writes: on Aug 04 2009 11:43 AM For what it's worth, I noticed the new action figures for the movie in Target the other day and the Destro one comes with a mask...Could be just a toy thing but made me hope he dons the silver at some point in the flick. This article was fun; I loved these toys as a kid as well as the Larry Hamma written comics...Which are the reasons why I may end up seeing this. However, all the trailers and images (save Snake Eyes vs. Storm Shadow) make me cringe. I hope it doesn't suck, I really, really hope it doesn't but I just cannot believe that it wont. At least we will always have these: (Reply to this) |

kaitune writes: on Aug 04 2009 12:00 PM In reply to this comment (#2533130) The early set of reviews is better than I have expected for this film (not that negative review would matter. I expect it to be just a brainless cheesy fun, and I would go to see it anyway.) May be it is (and it probably is) because G.I. Joe wasn't a part of my childhood, but I don't mind Destro's change that much. If he appears in his original costume, I would crack up like a hyena every time I see him and I don't have my childhood's impression to counter it either. It is also probably because I happen to like sinister figure in a suit. I don't like Cobra Commander's change though. He would look fine with his original costume. If they changed Destro's look fearing that he would look too cartoony, why the hell did they do this to Cobra Commander! He looks like a lamer version of Jason X! (Reply to this) |
