"G.I. Joe" is Coming! Plus Some ... Board Game Movies

Looks like "G.I. Joe" just took another step closer to becoming an actual movie -- plus we can expect a whole bunch of Hasbro-type games to hit the screens soon!

According to Variety, Hasbro and the William Morris Agency have just partnered up in an effort to turn a bunch of properties into TV shows, movies and video games. Properties like G.I. Joe, Monopoly, Trivial Pursuit, Clue, Candy Land and the Ouija Board.

"Our focus is on creating immersive brand experiences for Hasbro's brands," said Brian Goldner, the toymaker's chief operating officer, who is also an exec producer on "Transformers."

Which is another way of saying "We want to make a lot more money." Their first project will be teaming with Paramount and producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura on the "G.I. Joe" movie.

Apparently the toy company is shooting for something akin to Marvel's media saturation. OK, fine, "Candy Land" could probably make for a half-decent kids' movie, and I suppose you could maybe make a real estate comedy called "Monopoly" -- but "Clue" has already been done, and so has the Ouija Board (done to death, one might say). And a movie version of "Trivial Pursuit" would be just that: a trivial pursuit.

I remember reading a review of the G.I. Joe script from the Latino Review website about a month ago...and it wasn't good. You can read the review yourself at -

Anyway, call it a meaningless hunch, but I have a feeling that a Monopoly and a Candy Land film probably won't achieve the same sort of mass appeal that, say, Spider-Man did.

Probably, but you never know. Remember how ridiculous a movie based on the Pirates of Caribbean ride sounded?

You can tell that cinema is dead when they have to start adapting BOARD GAMES into movies??? HOW LAME CAN YOU BE??? Anyone else notice the William Morris company will be helping finance? Don't they make ciggarettes or is that another company with the same name? If so, I'm sure those movies will focus alot on the child age range. FOCUSED ON GETTING THEM SMOKING! BASTARDS!!!

That's Philip Morris. William Morris is just a tallent Agency, and the worlds biggest I think, as well there is a famous artist by that name.

But yeah I read that script review, and it sounds like the worst movie in the history of movie ideas. Why can't they make it just an action movie just like the TV show.

Board games don't belong in movies! I believe Candyland has already been made into a childrens animated feature film but Monopoly as a movie?? Alright well Im just putting it out there, but my candidate for the Monopoly man is either John Ratzenberger or Phillip Seymour Hoffman(with a mustache) or that one short fat funny actor with a mustache( descriptive, I know). But GI Joe will make a terrible movie.

Oddly enough, at this point, board games have a better adaptation record than video games. Clue was pure genius, frankly. I have no real doubt, though, that new board game adaptations will be a complete train wreck.

LOL, this article is funny. These aren't adaptations if you make up most of the story and characters yourself in a screenplay. It just has the property name.

Remember that Dungeons and Dragons movie years back?
I remember Richard Roeper said its like making a movie about chess.
Atleast Clue has characters, and I did like the movie from the 80s.

How do you make a movie about Monopoly, Candy Land and Ouija Board?
You must be a talented screenwriter if you can.
I like to play Monopoly though. GI Joe cartoon was okay as a kid from what I remember about it.
Hopefully, Trivial pursuit is a gameshow.

Anyway, I think they could pull off a Monopoly movie. Get a guy to look like that guy on the box and have him have a R rated adventure sort of like Dude Where's my Car or The Big Lebowski. You never know...

Candy Land could also be good.. If they made it as creepy looking as the original board game was. Candy Land would freak the living s*** out of me. It would be scarier than anything they put out in the last decade.

Just what we need. More Monopoly, Trivial Persuit, Clue and Candyland. Like we aren't all saturated enough with the hundreds of versions of these board games (especially Monopoly) already. I hand it to Hasbro for keeping these games known as 'The Board Games', but they really aren't good board games. There are a lot of lesser known board games out there that are much more fun and interesting like Ticket to Ride, Settlers of Catan, Entdecker, etc.. I always encourage new people to try these and they usually want to know where they can go to buy them. They're just shocked that there are board games with more entertainment value than what they know (Monopoly, Risk, Sorry, Clue), which is sad really.

With my board game rant out of the way, I can't think of how any of these movies, with the exeptions of G.I. Joe and Clue, have much of any chance to be good. Granted you may be able to come up with some way out of left field screenplay to make Candyland and/or Monopoly interesting as a movie, but more than likely they'll be more akin to say the Super Mario Bros movie. Pirates of the Caribbean I'd guess is more of an outlier, but probably one reason that they'd attempt making these movies.
