In Gigli, Martin Brest’s (Scent of a Woman, Midnight Run) unconventional romantic comedy, Larry Gigli (Ben Affleck), a low-level hood is given a high-level assignment to kidnap Brian (Justin Bartha), the psychologically challenged younger brother of a powerful federal prosecutor to help save a mob boss from going to prison. Hiding out in his one-bedroom apartment with Brian, Gigli is shocked when Ricki (Jennifer Lopez), a gorgeous, free-spirited female enforcer is sent to assist him because his boss thinks he’s likely to screw up. And from that moment on, Gigli’s world is turned upside down. Gigli finds himself falling in love with the unavailable Ricki and goes to extreme lengths to win her affection. The more she resists, the stronger the attraction becomes. By letting their feelings get in the way of business, Gigli and Ricki set in motion an unlikely chain of events that just could endanger their plans for a long-term relationship – and their lives. Now we know why Martin Brest didn’t have a screenplay produced since the 1970s.

There are moments that shine in Gigli, so let’s save the crucifixion for another production down the road.

Affleck and Lopez arelike a couple of well-groomed pets, two reasonably talented superstars from modest roots who enjoy the limelight so much, they've wagged their tails into a sea of overexposure.

Let's face it: Gigli is not one of the worst films ever made. The script sucks and suffers from too many edits, but don't take your envy out on J-Lo and Ben.

The cinematic equivalent of a three-car pile-up, this stupefyingly unfunny romantic/mob comedy is DOA from the opening credits to the bitter end.

For all the bad things said about Gigli, curiously no one has mentioned its musical score by John Powell. It’s one of the worst ever, like a sit-com laugh track pitched at the highest volume.

It's even more ghastly than its title may lead you to believe. And that's saying a lot.

Brest would have to go back to his outline to repair this lemon and give America something akin to what it's told it really wants -- a helping of Lopez-Affleck home movies.

Like the Energizer Bunny this mess just keeps going and going. And that's my suggestion -- just keep going and going right past any screen inflicted with the Gigli disease.

From the very start the movie flatlines like a heart monitor on a dead man. And it never improves.

Has no story, no redeeming characters that anyone could care about, and the actors are all on autopilot, completely soaked with their own vanity.

Why Gigli is getting so widely lambasted from other critics, I do not know. [It] may not be a life-changing motion picture, but it is always likable. Most of all, and most importantly, it has a good heart.
