In Gigli, Martin Brest’s (Scent of a Woman, Midnight Run) unconventional romantic comedy, Larry Gigli (Ben Affleck), a low-level hood is given a high-level assignment to kidnap Brian (Justin Bartha), the psychologically challenged younger brother of a powerful federal prosecutor to help save a mob boss from going to prison. Hiding out in his one-bedroom apartment with Brian, Gigli is shocked when Ricki (Jennifer Lopez), a gorgeous, free-spirited female enforcer is sent to assist him because his boss thinks he’s likely to screw up. And from that moment on, Gigli’s world is turned upside down. Gigli finds himself falling in love with the unavailable Ricki and goes to extreme lengths to win her affection. The more she resists, the stronger the attraction becomes. By letting their feelings get in the way of business, Gigli and Ricki set in motion an unlikely chain of events that just could endanger their plans for a long-term relationship – and their lives. This is not a great movie, but it isn't a bad one, either.

A mess of a movie that film-goers will stumble through as surely as they'll stumble over the ill-conceived title.

The movie is pretty much as bad as you've heard, a tangle of badness so thick it's hard to hack your way through and find the good idea that made writer/director Martin Brest think this was a story worth telling.

An inexplicable non-comedy whose chief virtue is its lack of screwball histrionics.

It's a catastrophic miscalculation of tone, a comatose comedy about mental illness, contract killers and corpse desecration.

Such an utter wreck of a movie you expect to see it lying on its side somewhere in rural Pennsylvania, with a small gang of engineers circling and a wisp of smoke rising from the caboose.

An inept attempt to do Elmore Leonard by Martin Brest, a filmmaker whose coarse sensibility makes him catastrophically unqualified to the task.

Lopez and Affleck should fire their agents. Or take a long, hard look at themselves in the mirror.

It's too long and far too contrived for such slight material, but it's far more entertaining than a long list of recent films.

Rarely has a movie that doesn't star Madonna achieved such a skin-crawling mixture of deluded preening and bungled humour.

Its awkward Rain Man- meets-gangsters- in-love plot lurches forward with such clumsiness it's hard to believe writer/director Martin Brest avoided seeing this thing flushed direct-to-video.

Kudos to Brest, and to Affleck and Lopez, who deliver -- although that delivery is exactly the opposite of what their fans, and their disbelievers, expect to receive.

Gigli is so unrelentingly bad that people may want to see it just as a bonding experience; viewers (read: victims) will want to talk and comfort each other afterwards.
