Set in the picturesque town of Star Falls, Connecticut, GILMORE GIRLS is a charming television drama that tells the story of a thirtysomething-year-old single mother, Lorelai Gilmore (Lauren Graham), and her precocious teenage daughter, Rory (Alexis Bledel), as they navigate their way through the ups and downs of everyday life. In the pilot, Rory gets into Chilton, a highly prestigious (but expensive) prep school. Because Lorelai cannot manage the tuition on her own, she must resort to asking her parents for help. This is a very hard task for Lorelai because she has been somewhat estranged from her family since leaving home to have Rory at the age of 16. While Rory's grandparents agree to help out, they do so under one condition-that Rory and Lorelai will join them for dinner once every week from that point on. The strained relationship between Lorelai and her parents greatly contrasts her connection with Rory, who relates to her mother more as a best friend than as a maternal figure. This episode establishes that unique bond, which continues to form the core of the series throughout its many seasons. GILMORE GIRLS sets itself apart from other family dramas by offering witty dialogue delivered at a breakneck pace, and clever plotlines incorporating a series of amusing and eccentric characters.
