Spike Lee's GIRL 6 is a provocative examination of the world of phone sex and its effect on one of its purveyors: beautiful, black, aspiring actress (Theresa Randle) is at the end of her rope after having been bounced by both her agent and acting teacher. So she becomes Girl 6 at a family-like phone sex company, whispering kinky sweet nothings into the ears of men; some of the fantasies are dramatized by Lee. Girl 6 excels at her new job, so much so that she becomes addicted to it--and this could lead to serious trouble when she decides to meet one of her clients in person. Scripted by Suzan-Lori Parks, GIRL 6 blends fantasy and reality in typical Lee fashion, resulting in a work that is as much a comedy as a drama. A who's who of popular celebrities appear in supporting roles, including Madonna, Naomi Campbell, Quentin Tarantino, Peter Berg, and Gretchen Mol, giving GIRL 6 an even greater visual punch. The film, colorfully photographed by Malik Hassan Sayeed, boasts a soundtrack written and performed by Prince, adding even more spunk--and funk--to the proceedings. [More]

Girl 6 is entertaining and at times quite funny. But about halfway through it seems to run out of ideas.

There's something refreshing about the film's reckless proximity to anarchy, the stylishly imaginative cinematography and lusciously exorbitant Prince soundtrack, even if it does ring hollow when Lee tries to get serious on us.

Lee is back to his independent roots, doesn't have an axe to grind and just enjoys playing with the camera and letting the actors, especially Randle, do the right thing.

While it's often quite funny, Spike Lee's newest is really a surprisingly vivid dramatic study of an aspiring actress in moonlighting hell.

The main character is never well-defined, the drama often seems half-hearted, and the comedy repeatedly falls flat.

Erratic, at times predictable as hell, and at other times unruly and inventive.

Lee's never been too hip to women's perspectives, and in Girl 6, he proves that marriage, maturity and 10 years of filmmaking haven't substantially corrected his blind spot.

Slight and superficial, Spike Lee's look at the phone-sex industry through the life of one femme is completely from the outside; even gifted star Theresa Randall can't help this downbeat but shallow yarn, arguably his weakest work to date.

Girl 6, the story of a girl and her stint in the phone sex biz, is a sloppy and problematic film, no diggity.

Lee may have a keen sense of setting and dialogue, but his characterization is off.

Mr. Lee isn't as successful at shaping a story around Girl 6, but enjoying her company is all his slender, sunny film really tries to do.

Lee draws his lines between fantasy and reality without much confidence and with only a sketchy logic.

While Lee is a skillful director, he's also more coldly analytical than emotional, and it is not his style to get us to feel for this woman as much as we should.

Instead of effervescent and mercurial, the movie is simply muddled. What happened?

Spike Lee has been erratic at best, misogynist occasionally, but Girl 6 hits a new low.
