Movie Info

Kristen Wiig stars as Imogene, once a promising young New York playwright whose promise has fizzled, thanks to a crisis of confidence. Heavily in denial about being dumped by her society boyfriend, Imogene uses her skill for drama to stage an elaborate fake suicide as an appeal for his sympathy. But her attempt backfires when she's put into the custody of Zelda, her estranged gambling addict mother (Annette Bening), and must return home with her to the Jersey shore. Desperate to get back to her

Berman and Pulcini -- American Splendor, The Nanny Diaries -- found a tone somewhere between tragedy and nonsense.

There are moments to make you honestly wish it were a better movie, and that the semi-autobiographical screenplay by Michelle Morgan didn't feel so much like a first draft.

Kristen Wiig's comic artistry and its melodramatic tinge are squandered in this frenetic, schematic comedy, which also lays waste to a fertile premise.

"Girl Most Likely" is a strange movie, in that it has the atmosphere of a comedy and some extreme characters set up to be comical, but there are really no funny scenes.

All in all, this is an extremely forgettable film that will more than likely drift from your memory as you're watching it. Then again, what would you expect from trying to build a film out of clichés and nonsensical pieces?

A perfectly gauged performance by Wiig holds this ramshackle comedy-drama together, as she plays a woman forced to confront everything she has always hated about herself.

The twinned themes of self-invention and self-loathing are redolent of Rushmore, Flirting With Disaster and Young Adult but Imogene's brand of narcissism has its own velocity.

There's an over-reliance on Wiig's gift for ditzy, put-upon characters, although her charm wears thin, while the script veers between sit-com humour and pathos.

A watchable comedy enlivened by strong comic performances and likeable, offbeat characters, though Girl Most Likely settles for rough edges and quirky moments ...

Even though this comedy has a tendency to dip into cartoonish silliness, it's anchored by a razor-sharp performance by Wiig as a woman forced to confront everything she hates about herself.

Audience Reviews for Girl Most Likely

"Girl Most Likely" is an indie comedy about a former playwright who is having problems in her life, and has to be saved by a neglectful mother, a reserved brother, and two strange men who each have their own quirks. The supporting characters are designed to be idiosyncratic sidekicks, and in that way they in themselves are entertaining and unique, but Imogene (Wiig) is not. For being the main focus of the plot, Imogene is all over the place, and unless you can align yourself with someone selfish going through the process of becoming a more realized person, you will not enjoy the character. She is selfish, popularity obsessed, needy, and awkward, and degrades everyone she loves in order to feel better about herself. It's less a film about realizing the errors of your own ways and more so about simply realizing happiness, and that's such a boring topic for a film. Definitely interesting for many reasons, this film still underwhelms in many areas.

I'm not too sure what Girl Most Likely has set out to say or is trying to be. Nothing is really resolved as such and every situation is generally answered by an unrealistic but relatively funny scenario. It is funny and if you concentrate on just the humour you won't be disappointed because nothing else really makes sense. Is it supposed to? Well, I don't think the makers intended it not too but I guess silly was deemed more appropriate then preachy and I suppose there is nothing wrong with that especially when you have likable and well performed characters and a fairly punchy script. It's likable nonsense.

She has a lot to live up to. And a few things to live down.

Not bad movie! Girl Most Likely is full of potential and just like it's heroin, a lot is expected from it. It's a great set up with an amazing cast but where it has all those strengths- it's weaknesses are equal if not stronger. This is a low budget independent comedy that has a quirky tone to it. There may be a bit too much going on in this film. A subplot of Imogene trying to find her biological father doesn't do too much to move the story along. The ending also goes way over the top. But ultimately, Kristin Wiig makes Imogene a flawed yet lovable character who we root for.

Kristen Wiig stars as Imogene, a failed New York playwright awkwardly navigating the transition from Next Big Thing to Last Year's News. After both her career and relationship hit the skids, she's forced to make the humiliating move back home to New Jersey with her eccentric mother and younger brother (Annette Bening and Christopher Fitzgerald). Adding further insult to injury, there's a strange man sleeping in her old bedroom (Darren Criss) and an even stranger man sleeping in her mother's bed (Matt Dillon). Through it all, Imogene eventually realizes that as part of her rebuilding process she must finally come to love and accept both her family and her Jersey roots if she's ever going to be stable enough to get the hell away from them.

Based on the reviews I would have never even seen this, but it was a slow day at Red Box (in other words I have seen everything in there except the zombies things) and I'm glad I did. Kristen Wiig gives an understated performance. Annette Bening is great as the mother. And the plot, while wildly unbelievable, sucked me in. Christopher Fitzgerald plays a great addled brother who turns out to be some kind of genius. Quite enjoyable. Give it ten minutes then you're in.
