Girl... is one of the smartest and least cluttered of all the holiday season's new films, not to mention one of the most well-acted and visually sumptuous.

She becomes a maid in the house of Johannes Vermeer and gradually attracts the master painter's attention. Though worlds apart in upbringing, education and social standing, Vermeer recognizes Griet's intuitive understanding of color and light and slowly draws her into the mysterious world of his paintings. Vermeer is a perfectionist, often taking months to finish a painting. His shrewd mother-in-law, Maria Thins, struggles to maintain the family's lavish lifestyle on the income from his painstakingly meager output. Seeing that Griet inspires Vermeer, she takes the dangerous decision to allow their clandestine relationship to develop. Plunged into a chaotic Catholic household run by Vermeer's volatile wife Catharina, surrounded by an ever-increasing brood of children, Griet is increasingly at risk of exposure or worse. Twelve-year-old Cornelia, a mischievous girl who sees more than she should, quickly grows jealous and suspicious of Griet and is determined to cause trouble. Alone and unprotected, Griet also contends with the attentions of Pieter, a local butcher boy, and Vermeer's patron, the wealthy and lascivious Master van Ruijven, who is frustrated that his money does not buy him control over the artist. While Griet falls increasingly under Vermeer's spell, she cannot be sure of his feelings for her. The Machiavellian van Ruijven, sensing the intimacy between master and maid, gleefully contrives a commission for Vermeer to paint Griet alone. The result will be one of the greatest paintings ever created, but at what cost? [More]

Reviews for Girl with a Pearl Earring
...a sight for sore eyes, but there's something missing here that would make the film a truly mesmerizing piece. A good story.
Scarlett Johansson deserves the Oscar simply because she's in this movie and not "Mona Lisa Smile."
Every glance and gesture is an extraordinary vision bathed in lingering and hypnotic beauty.
a slow-moving, but engrossing film that is full of ... sensual photography that spins visual gold out of the most mundane of everyday activities
Director Peter Webber... creates such a sustained moment of such beauty and silence that you may forget to breathe.
There are several moments in the picture so evocative, so stunning that they literally make you hold your breath.
The movie offers tantalizing glimpses of the leaded glass windows, rich mosaic fabrics and cobbled streets immortalized in his work.
Girl With a Pearl Earring is as beautiful to look at as a Vermeer painting. Unfortunately, it's also pretentious swill.
I can think of many ways the film could have gone wrong, but it goes right, because it doesn't cook up melodrama and romantic intrigue but tells a story that's content with its simplicity.
...she successfully conveyed much of her emotion through her eyes, posture and full lips.
This is one of those fit-for-framing productions that screams, 'Look at me! Look at me! Don't bother with what's beneath the surface.'
A gaffer's wet dream, but I do not think that screenwriter Olivia Hetreed actually read the novel that was to be the basis for her first feature film.
Apparently, Vermeer was the sole passionate hippie in a town full of puritans, the latter group epitomized by Tom Wilkinson as designated horny old hypocrite Van Ruijven.
With concision and well-chosen detail, Peter Webber's exceedingly accomplished first feature beautifully evokes the world the artist inhabited 340 years ago while deftly and discreetly delineating the personal intrigue within his teeming household.
A film from another time and place, when patience and atmosphere transcended the need for gear-shifting plot points or exaggerated characterizations.
A languorous, quietly mesmeric romantic drama of artistic (and other pressing) urges.
A lesson in interesting cinematography, but not in great movie-making - the characters are like still-life figures with no soul.
