She becomes a maid in the house of Johannes Vermeer and gradually attracts the master painter's attention. Though worlds apart in upbringing, education and social standing, Vermeer recognizes Griet's intuitive understanding of color and light and slowly draws her into the mysterious world of his paintings. Vermeer is a perfectionist, often taking months to finish a painting. His shrewd mother-in-law, Maria Thins, struggles to maintain the family's lavish lifestyle on the income from his painstakingly meager output. Seeing that Griet inspires Vermeer, she takes the dangerous decision to allow their clandestine relationship to develop. Plunged into a chaotic Catholic household run by Vermeer's volatile wife Catharina, surrounded by an ever-increasing brood of children, Griet is increasingly at risk of exposure or worse. Twelve-year-old Cornelia, a mischievous girl who sees more than she should, quickly grows jealous and suspicious of Griet and is determined to cause trouble. Alone and unprotected, Griet also contends with the attentions of Pieter, a local butcher boy, and Vermeer's patron, the wealthy and lascivious Master van Ruijven, who is frustrated that his money does not buy him control over the artist. While Griet falls increasingly under Vermeer's spell, she cannot be sure of his feelings for her. The Machiavellian van Ruijven, sensing the intimacy between master and maid, gleefully contrives a commission for Vermeer to paint Griet alone. The result will be one of the greatest paintings ever created, but at what cost? [More]

Reviews for Girl with a Pearl Earring
Seems to have been made to appeal to viewers who believe that a prestigious painting is infinitely more important than a mere movie that celebrates the exalted existence of this painting.
So passionately realized by Webber and his team, that its clichés are easy to forgive.
You've never seen so many people talking and walking so slowly or registering their emotions so unblinkingly.
A fine adaptation that perfectly captures the novel's quiet moodiness.
Pretty much the whole movie is a series of poses, static and uninvolving, except for cinematographer Eduardo Serra's lighting, which makes everything look convincingly Vermeer-ish
Elegant in concept, in restraint, and in the sheer beauty of its representation of Vermeer's world
Vermeer's famous painting comes semi-alive in this stultifyingly tasteful adaptation of a ludicrous book. Go to the museum instead.
The relationship between Griet and Vermeer plays out almost like a dance. The whole movie plays like that, a romance and a history told in waltz time.
It would be hard to overpraise Johansson -- who could hardly look more perfect for the part -- for her extraordinary ability to convey so much emotion with so few words.
It's meant to deliver conflict and characters, motivation and crisis. Instead it delivers period details, pretty scenery, interesting landscapes and elegant still lifes.
Like stepping inside a Vermeer painting. The light, color and composition are eerily perfect.
A movie of small charms and sumptuous malaise. Even if you can appreciate its elaborate posing, there’s never a lavish emotionalism which sweeps you along.
This is a motion picture that has the stillness of a painting. Watching it is like watching pretty paint dry.
It's a period piece which moves about as fast as paint dries, but it takes us inside the world of a great artist.
We talk pejoratively of films being soporific, but this one sort of lulls you into a restful complacency.
