An okay film weighed down in cliches but more than made up for by its very real characters and the charismatic performance turned in by its star.

Consensus: Michelle Rodriguez gives a compelling performance, despite lack of a boxing background; Karyn Kusama packs a punch with this directorial debut.

In GIRLFIGHT, Diana Guzman (Michelle Rodriguez) is a tough high school girl with a violent streak. Between problems at school, a father who belittles her, and a lonely social life, she searches for some way to find respect, love, and challenge. Diana finds all those things in the boxing ring at a gritty Brooklyn gym, where she begins training against her father's will and eventually earns the gym's championship for female boxers. Rodriguez's performance is what carries the film, as she makes the character of Diana Guzman real in every sense. Guzman is an awkward teenage girl whose only advantage is that she's angry. As she channels this anger into determination, she doesn't become a flawless heroine--when she gets punched in the face, it hurts--but the way she grows internally is visible, and that is the truly beautiful thing about this film. Director Karyn Kusama should also be commended for the film's subtle communication of difficult family issues and its objectivity in telling this slightly feminist tale. The inspiring soundtrack features a terrific title song by Theodore Shapiro as well as hits by artists such as Queen Latifah. A story of willpower, strength, and endurance, GIRLFIGHT wins on all fronts. [More]

Reviews for Girlfight
Karyn Kusama ... has made a movie as tough-minded as its right-hooking heroine, and just as intelligent.
Although a combination of familiar genres, Girlfight is refreshing and surprising, the way independent movies are supposed to be.
While Kusama champions masculinity in women, she offsets it with a range of gender identities and a keen sense of milieu.
Gradually ... Kusama's screenplay and newcomer Rodriguez' performance win you over before you realize it because they're just so real.
Despite an ending that offers too much resolution to fit with the film’s grittiness, Kusama’s story stays tough and taut, like a perfectly toned rack of abs ready to take a punch.
It's enough to restore your faith in independent filmmaking and Sundance buzz.
A compellingly watchable story with a charismatic new find in its starring role.
Karyn Kusama has created in Diana a strong, dynamic, complex female character the likes of which we rarely see onscreen.
Another mediocre Sundance winner that, thanks to an inordinate amount of hype and publicity, now seems far too big for its britches.
One thing about the film plays explosively in any viewing context -- the blazing performance by newcomer Michelle Rodriguez.
This is a very winning debut film that features a powerful central performance.
[Rodriguez'] performance is an amateur triumph, but the same can't really be said for the film, which doesn't know what to do with Diana's unruliness except to channel it into a feminist fable of empowerment.
Despite the promise of Kusama's debut and the voguish nature of its politics, Girlfight ultimately plays like a hedged bet, rather than the knockout punch it has been taken to be.
