Movie Info

This dull, routine slasher film focuses on a nighttime scavenger hunt sponsored by a sorority that takes a tragic turn when a figure in a bear costume with knives strapped to one "paw" begins slashing the women to death. Years ago, a student was killed by her mentally unbalanced boyfriend when she broke off their relationship. After his capture and trial, the young killer was sent to the local Weston Hill Sanitorium for the mentally insane -- and now he has escaped. Even though the sorority is rapidly losing members, the police are no closer to finding the killer than before they heard of the crimes, so Mac (Hal Holbrook), the original victim's father and head of campus security, goes after the serial murderer himself. Even a surprise ending cannot pull the rest of this film out of the horror doldrums.more

For the devious bad guy's creative and unsettling garb alone, Girls Nite Out earns more points than it otherwise probably warrants.

Audience Reviews for Girls Nite Out

Excellent slasher/mystery film features a killer with knives for fingers (pre-dating Freddy Krueger). Shocking ending.

Kyle Forrest

This mid 80s slasher spends a ridiculous amount of time trying to build character for the miscellaneous body count. There is a late night scavenger hunt on campus and young girls wander off by themselves to be killed by someone in the school mascot's bear suit. There is a long-winded backstory that is probably supposed to engage the audience, but there are too many characters to keep them all straight. If one lowers the bar enough, Girls Nite Out is a watchable slasher flick, if you have enough beer and friends to help pass the time between kill scenes but iff you sit down and watch this sucker carefully, you might be too bored in the first 20 minutes to allow it to keep running. On a positive note, most of the acting is decent and Hal Holbrook shows up as a cop to give the movie some b-grade street cred. The main issue is the writing - they were perhaps too ambitious and someone should've had enough sense to cut this down to about 80 minutes or so. A little more creativity in the kill scenes might've been helpful too. Good for slasher completists only.

This was pretty fucking corny all the way around, the acting is suspect and full of hammy impersonations and mugging for the camera that will make you hate college basketball players with a passion. Eventually the team mascot is killed and the killer dons the mascot costume to move around campus undetected.

It's fairly poor, with little to really recommend it unless you're some kind of hardcore completist.
