Notwithsdanding the blood, gore, and CG effects, this is an old-fashioned historical saga, a throwabck to the sand-and-sandals epics of Quo Vadis and Ben-Hur.
Borrowing from the moron that is Pauline Kael, the real "stooges" out there are people like you who critisize masterpieces, not world class actors like Russel Crowe who make entertainment virtual reality. I'd like to see Roger Ebert & co. match the ability of Ridley Scott. The academy going insane? Why doesn't he come back with an oscar and then he can say that in someone's face.
Truth is, I bet that if you name a single movie that in your opinion reaches the scale of epic proportions in regards to all aspets of film that Gladiator did, you could pick away at all its little faults. Trust me, they'd be there.
So, don't form an easy line behind the masses. Use your eyes and sense of reality, you're a critic after all. Otherwise you'll end up sharing a salad with Susan Wloszczyna and other idiots like Rob Gonslaves or John R. McEwan.
In other words the only gaudy, low-brow entertainment around here is your review.
