At an orphanage, she befriends Louise (Da Brat) and Roxanne (Tia Texada), with the help of her cuddly cat. Flash forward to 1983. Billie and her friends are spotted by a record producer, Timothy Walker (Terrence Howard), who wants them to sing backup for his latest pop-music discovery. But when super DJ Dice (Max Beesley) hears Billie's incredible voice, he makes a shady deal with Timothy to get her out of that dead-end situation. Soon, Billie and Dice are making hits inside the studio, and falling in love outside of it. Eventually, the pressure of her newfound celebrity puts too heavy a strain on Billie, forcing her to decide what it is she really wants from Dice, and what she wants for herself. Directed by Vondie Curtis-Hall, GLITTER is a breezy return to the dance clubs and fashions of 1980s-era Manhattan, with a nostalgic electric musical score (compliments of Terence Blanchard and legendary producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis). Reviews for Glitter
Though the story repeats every cliche of the form, it manages to get things wrong in new and fascinating ways.
If you truly love Mariah Carey, then there's a slim chance you will think her movie debut, Glitter, an old-fashioned star-is-born tale, is good.
Above all, the film is lacking in joy. It never seems like it's fun to be Billie Frank.
If Glitter were just a little worse, it might be a lot better. Or a least much more fun.
Ms. Carey has the voice of a dove but sad to say the acting range of a parakeet.
Occasionally, I see a chunk of cinematic debris that strikes so many wrong chords that I can't figure out how the project was greenlighted in the first place. This is one of those incidents.
Another of what have become far too common lately: unintentional laughfests.
Having gone through a few different titles on its ignominious path to the big screen, Glitter deserves yet another title: A Star Is Dull.
Hampered by shallow sentiment, awful dialogue, loose plot threads, a sucky romantic subplot, and ugly voice dubbing in places.
About as fresh as rancid Chinese food that has been stuck in the back of the refrigerator for several months.
Carey's exceedingly modest acting talents will likely have her fans advising her to keep her day job.
