At an orphanage, she befriends Louise (Da Brat) and Roxanne (Tia Texada), with the help of her cuddly cat. Flash forward to 1983. Billie and her friends are spotted by a record producer, Timothy Walker (Terrence Howard), who wants them to sing backup for his latest pop-music discovery. But when super DJ Dice (Max Beesley) hears Billie's incredible voice, he makes a shady deal with Timothy to get her out of that dead-end situation. Soon, Billie and Dice are making hits inside the studio, and falling in love outside of it. Eventually, the pressure of her newfound celebrity puts too heavy a strain on Billie, forcing her to decide what it is she really wants from Dice, and what she wants for herself. Directed by Vondie Curtis-Hall, GLITTER is a breezy return to the dance clubs and fashions of 1980s-era Manhattan, with a nostalgic electric musical score (compliments of Terence Blanchard and legendary producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis). Reviews for Glitter
You'd have a breakdown, too, if you were stuck in a movie as drab and glum as Glitter.
Filled with some amateurish acting, atrocious dialogue and ham-fisted direction, the film is a mess pretty much from the get-go and only gets worse as it proceeds.
Director Vondie Curtis-Hall does manage to put a professional sheen on events, but can't stop many moments of high drama from turning into eruptions of unintentional hilarity.
The dubbing of the musical numbers is so inept that any cathartic effect of the music is totally lost in the distances between artist, art and audience.
Glitter, the kind of movie only 11-year-old girls who dot their i's with hearts would find bearable, is filled with unintentionally humorous moments that tower over any comedy released this year.
The no-brow acting, oversimplifying of the path to success and supersappy ending are only some of the film's fatal flaws.
Succeeds only in being the most unintentionally funny film since Battlefield Earth.
A hopeless chain of cliches--half wish-fulfillment fantasy and half weepy soap opera.
This predictable, cheesy, rose-colored music industry yarn is so hollow that Carey's blood-curdling high-register warble practically echoes around the theater.
The great failure of Glitter is that it stops just short of being deliciously bad enough to qualify as a camp classic.
An unintentionally hilarious compendium of time-tested cinematic cliches that illustrates the chasm between hopeful imitation and successful duplication.
Only diehard Mariah fans, 11-year-old girls, or anyone truly desperate to escape last week's terror might find some reason to sit through this bland, bloated, self-addressed valentine.
Glitter could have set its sights higher or at least could have been more even in tone, but there's no denying that the material fits Mariah Carey like one of her skin-tight gowns.
