Michael Winterbottom directs this sobering slice-of-life melodrama about one man's experience with multiple sclerosis. Nick Cameron (Robert Carlyle) is an ordinary construction worker and part-time footballer, whose life finally seems to be headed in the right direction when he meets and falls in love with Karen (Juliet Aubrey). Unfortunately, his happiness is short-lived as he begins to show symptoms of a degenerative disease: numbness, double vision, and lack of bodily control. Gradually, it becomes clear that Nick has become afflicted with M.S. Although Karen stands beside him at every moment, trying to give him the support needed to remain optimistic and hopeful, Nick remains bitter about his situation. He must find strength within himself to appreciate Karen's ceaseless efforts, as well as learn to adapt to his new life in a wheelchair. From the very beginning, Winterbottom disguises his film as a lighthearted comedy, which adds even greater impact when things begin to take a turn for the serious. It is this approach, in addition to Carlyle's remarkably sincere performance, that makes GO NOW such a poignant, inspiring drama. Featuring standout supporting turns from Aubrey and James Nesbitt, who plays Nick's best friend, Tony. [More]
