The Year in Five Favorite Films

Summary

People love making lists, and filmmakers are no different. Each year we talk to a host of different people as part of our enduring Five Favorite Films feature, in which -- stay with us on this one -- we ask the talent to pick their all-time five favorite films. Or, as the case may be, the ones that they're currently into, have inspired their latest project, or just randomly tumble from their minds and into the ether in an unchecked stream of consciousness. Here then, we thought we'd have a quick look back at some of the stats and highlights of 2012... Back to Article

Raiders of the Lost Ark - I saw it for the first time at 4 years old and no movie has ever made me feel the same way about cinema since. Most movie's even the great ones don't make me feel the way I do when I watch it on TV even now. Even at 36 I still want to be Indiana Jones when I grow up.
2. Rob Roy - Liam Neeson's best performance for my money and Tim Roth gives one of the most underrated villainous performances in movie history which totally adds up to perhaps the most satisfying ending ever. Was overshadowed a bit by the hype around Braveheart when it first came out and Rob Roy isn't as instantly gratifying, but if you give it the time I think you'll see it's a superior movie.
3. Finding Neverland - Johnny Depp, Kate Winslet, Dustin Hoffman and Freddy Highmore are so believable at times that you're transported to Neverland with a surprisingly minimal amount of special effects. A movie that even if it's not true, should be.
4. L.A. Confidential - Gladiator be damned, this is Russell Crowe at his rawly animalistic best. There are probably a dozen performances in this movie that were Oscar caliber aside from Kim Basingers which actually won the Oscar. From start to finish in every aspect of film making just about perfection. Reminds me of all those movie's people loved from the 1970's on it doesn't look like crap because of the 70's general suckiness outside of filmmaking (fashion, cars, hairstyles, etc) Rolo Tamasi.
5. The Usual Suspects - Again magnificent performances all around and an ending so surprising The Sixth Senses ending looks at it and says "God damn, that's a surprising ending!!!"
Honorable mentions to The Magnificent Seven, V for Vendetta, Empire Strikes Back, TDK, Dr. Strangelove, Bride of Frankenstein, Gods and Monsters and because I'm really starting to feel like I'm cheating now Empire Strikes back...**cough cough** Braveheart.
