It's a second movie made largely out of the bits and pieces of Mr. Puzo's novel that didn't fit into the first. It's a Frankenstein's monster stitched together from leftover parts. It talks. It moves in fits and starts but it has no mind of its own.
Your taste in movies is an insult to this planet.

Vincent is dead so he can't hear you. But maybe he can read this from heaven: Vincent, you were a big donkey. May your soul rest in peace.

so u hate star wars, u hate this amazing picture??? why the hell are u a critic if you hate movies!?
May 4 - 07:16 AM
Are you a moron? People can have their own opinions for movies. And it seems like you are saying that if you are a movie critic, you must love every single movie. And what do 'critics' do? Their job isn't to love every movie, its to analyse them and critique them, which is what he has done.
Feb 23 - 04:14 PM
That's not what this person is saying at all. To find fault in the movie in the way that Canby does, is to admit that he is an extremely flawed critic. This is one of the most celebrated films of all time for good reason. The faults that Canby finds in this film are in reality some of it's greatest strengths. The fractured nature of the film, which Canby criticizes, is used to juxtapose Michael's increasing isolation and paranoia with young Vito's strength at bringing people together in his community to support him. The mood and lighting are frequently praised for the tone that they set. Here Canby is also misguided in his criticism.

I could go on, and further deconstruct Mr. Canby's review. But to sum up... by finding fault in this film, along with some of the other classics that Canby wrongly criticized, showed that he was either purposefully critical of great films for the sole purpose of attracting attention to himself, or completely misguided in his analysis of film. Either way, it is a shame that he would have such a large pulpit from which to spew his misguided criticism of great films

It's funny that you mention communists. The man had an opinion, and he expressed it. Big Deal.

you crazy or what, ?? how the hell did you get to be a critic??
Jul 23 - 09:24 PM
you should really think before leaving an unbearably stupid comment (like all of the others here), since you only agree with the critics 62% of the time.
Jun 4 - 04:58 PM
Just looking at the comments for one of my favorite movies and it looks like you don't have anything better to do than to comment on something that is over 3 years old!
Jun 22 - 05:15 PM
His comment is necessary. It's never too late to answer to stupidity. Some comment's are celebrating Vincent Canby's death, others are hoping he's burning in hell. The Godfather II is also one of my favourite movie, but you have to accept that someone else didn't like it. I know that I lost some of my time writing this, but I'm happy to be one of the few, with The Stunner, who hasn't lost his critical thinking.
Jul 24 - 05:19 PM
I wish someone didn't like the godfather just to have someone point out what they didn't lile
