Erskine Caldwell's steamy novel God's Little Acre was given a film adaptation in 1958. A heavily grayed-up Robert Ryan plays Ty Ty Walden, the patriarch of a slovenly backwoods family. As Ty Ty digs around his farm in search of gold (which he has yet to find), his son in law Bill Thompson (Aldo Ray) carries on an adulterous affair with the sluttish Griselda (Tina Louise). Sorry to say it, but this one was really bad. There are way too many sub plots that aren't well developed to begin with, and when we only get to follow each character for a short period of time, it becomes even less captivating. Sleeping pill.

Heavy and intense, but very well acted. Certainly not a cheery film. Well photographed. The score is quite good, Steamy with dialogue the same. Good southern atmosphere. It is hard to believe how controversial it was in it's time.
