Tom Spader (Glover) is a successful attorney who decides to cement his upper-class status by moving his family into a posh suburban neighborhood, where he and his wife Mabel (Goldberg) do their utmost to blend into their new, all-white surroundings. But just when the Spaders think they've finally been accepted, another African-American family moves in next door with their lottery winnings and a feisty matriarch (the outrageous comedienne Mo'Nique).
