LOL at all these idiot commenters who are complaining about a bad review from 45 YEARS AGO at a time when spaghetti westerns were looked down upon and would never win best picture!

Even Ebert said he initially gave the movie 3 stars when it nowadays definitely deserves 4.

Maybe you morons should READ THE REVIEW and CHECK THE DATE before judging the whole thing based on one sentence and pretending like it was written today.

This movie operates on a plane you are clearly not on, and so you are very unfortunate. I didn't think the characterisation was realistic either, but like in Platoon or similar films, clearly the director has done that for a purpose. This movie does not just describe a distinct time period in 3 peoples lives, it describes their entire lives and everything they are. Obviously that requires some character juice concentrate, otherwise the delivery of the message at the end would be bland or meaningless. As it stands it's one of the best expressed philosophical statements in movie history. Ironically it was too subtle for you!

Come on! This review is from 1965, when spaghetti westerns were looked down on. These reviews aren't relevant today, GBU is a stonecold classic.
