Bob Montagnet (Nick Nolte) is about to gamble it all on the casino heist of a lifetime; a spectacular sleight of hand - two heists, one real, one not, but which is which? Inspired by the Jean Pierre Melville classic BOB LE FLAMBEUR, THE GOOD THIEF is a remake of an original that features a complex plot full of copies and originals. The film’s hero draws his inspiration from the man he regards as the greatest thief and copycat of all...Picasso. Under the watchful eye of Roger (Tchéky Karyo), a policeman who would as soon save his longtime opponent as arrest him, Montagnet assembles a team that consists of partners Paulo (Saїd Taghmaoui) and Raoul (Gérard Darmon), technical mastermind Vladimer (Emir Kusturica), former-drug-dealer-turned-informant Said (Ouassini Embarek), Anne (Nutsa Kukhianidze), a young Eastern European girl Montagnet rescued from prostitution, and the perfect complement to a double theft - identical twins Albert and Bertram (Mark and Mike Polish). THE GOOD THIEF also features Ralph Fiennes as a ruthless art dealer. THE GOOD THIEF was produced by Stephen Woolley, John Wells and Seaton McLean and financed by ALLIANCE ATLANTIS. It was shot by Oscar®-winning cameraman Chris Menges (THE KILLING FIELDS, THE MISSION) and Jordan’s long-standing team of skilled technicians. The film is a Stephen Woolley/John Wells/Alliance Atlantis production of a Neil Jordan film co-produced by Tracey Seaward and executive produced by Neil Jordan, Kristin Harms and Thierry de Navacelle. Reviews for The Good Thief
To the extent that it's a rhapsody on the theme of Nick Nolte, The Good Thief has considerable charm.
A bad movie that careens and kazooms from one moment of flip, empty sophistication to another.
If The Good Thief isn't up to the work that inspired it, it's nevertheless fresh and distinct.
Jordan's approach assumes a certain intelligence, and attentiveness, in his audience, but his joyride through the French Riviera always keeps us belted in.
It's a great surprise that The Good Thief actually works, leaving Melville behind and giving us the vibrant, exciting work of another interesting director, Neil Jordan.
Neil Jordan/Nick Nolte caper flick is full of European charm, American swagger and far more style than substance.
Nolte sounds like a muppet now, and the film itself isn't very engaging.
An Irish director reconfigures an old French film with an American star and a Russian hooker. And it works.
Although there's enough of a good time in The Good Thief to merit half a thumb's up, Melville's film remains the original and Jordan's version very much an over-exuberant replica.
Observed through the twitchy prism of Nolte, this Bob offers a brilliant contrast to the original.
Nolte is not only made for the role, he's also rehearsed it in real life.
Allows cinematographer Chris Menges to work at his artful best, but in the end it seems as if Jordan has turned out a glamorized version of the kind of movies that were terrific partly because they were made on the cheap.
Whether or not Nolte topped up every day on the set, it is clear that he was born to play Bob.
Mr. Jordan adeptly keeps the movie saturated in jazzy cool, preserving the original film's hard-boiled romantic notions of what does and does not make a good thief.
[Neil] Jordan may hold the title and registration, but Nolte is definitely behind the wheel ... a highly enjoyable heist flick that's light on genre cliches
Extremely smart and cleverly crafted, this heist movie set on the French Riviera will keep you guessing even when you already know the outcome.
