Jordan returns to the demimonde -- and the more personal style of filmmaking -- of his earlier triumphs, such as Mona Lisa and The Crying Game.

Bob Montagnet (Nick Nolte) is about to gamble it all on the casino heist of a lifetime; a spectacular sleight of hand - two heists, one real, one not, but which is which? Inspired by the Jean Pierre Melville classic BOB LE FLAMBEUR, THE GOOD THIEF is a remake of an original that features a complex plot full of copies and originals. The film’s hero draws his inspiration from the man he regards as the greatest thief and copycat of all...Picasso. Under the watchful eye of Roger (Tchéky Karyo), a policeman who would as soon save his longtime opponent as arrest him, Montagnet assembles a team that consists of partners Paulo (Saїd Taghmaoui) and Raoul (Gérard Darmon), technical mastermind Vladimer (Emir Kusturica), former-drug-dealer-turned-informant Said (Ouassini Embarek), Anne (Nutsa Kukhianidze), a young Eastern European girl Montagnet rescued from prostitution, and the perfect complement to a double theft - identical twins Albert and Bertram (Mark and Mike Polish). THE GOOD THIEF also features Ralph Fiennes as a ruthless art dealer. THE GOOD THIEF was produced by Stephen Woolley, John Wells and Seaton McLean and financed by ALLIANCE ATLANTIS. It was shot by Oscar®-winning cameraman Chris Menges (THE KILLING FIELDS, THE MISSION) and Jordan’s long-standing team of skilled technicians. The film is a Stephen Woolley/John Wells/Alliance Atlantis production of a Neil Jordan film co-produced by Tracey Seaward and executive produced by Neil Jordan, Kristin Harms and Thierry de Navacelle. Reviews for The Good Thief
It's vibrant, tremendously exciting, and done with a wit, feeling and panache that keep your mind and senses in constant overdrive.
Few actors will command my butt into a theater seat like Nolte does, and his latest should prove a huge treat to those who feel the same.
Playing a down and out American expatriate gambler, strung out on heroin in the early going and planning his Last Great Heist by the film’s midpoint, Nolte gives another effortlessly honest performance.
[Jordan] paces things at a leisurely lope, the better to soak in the atmosphere and enjoy the witty repartee that fills the script.
This remake of Jean-Pierre Melville's 1955 Bob le Flambeur tries for a stylish, shambling grace. But like Bob, it can't quite get it up.
If Academy Awards voters are still in a forgiving mood next year, Nolte deserves a best actor nomination.
Heist movies can be a gamble. If you're lucky, you hit the jackpot with a stylish, well-plotted winner like Ocean's Eleven. Other times, you roll snake eyes with convoluted capers like The Good Thief.
The Good Thief plays to Nolte's strengths just as much as The Quiet American showcased Michael Caine's formidable talents.
The Good Thief is a stylized heist film with an accomplished performance by Nick Nolte that celebrates the whimsical moves of Lady Luck in the lives of those who have nothing to lose.
In terms of its myriad screen predecessors, it's still on the high side of 'heist.'
Like the good thief himself, Jordan turns out to be too clever by half, organizing a caper that's noisy and flashy where subtlety and moodiness would be far more effective.
It's thin movie tinsel that, while lovingly polished, never becomes more than tinsel.
The Good Thief has the restless motion one associates with cinematographer Chris Menges ... and the casual joyousness of a work made out of sheer movie love.
Reworking the 1955 French film Bob le Flambeur, director Neil Jordan has crafted a classic of his own.
