Movie Info

The sly members of the Comedie Francaise conspire to give an ego-maniacal, arrogant English actor by playing an elaborate practical joke upon him in this lively romantic comedy. 18th century London thespian David Garrick's pomposity is well known on both sides of the English Channel. One day, he announces to his Drury Lane audience that he has a new gig guest starring in the upcoming production of Don Juan with the Comedie Francaise in Paris. During the announcement, he boorishly brags that he is planning to teach the French troupe how to really act. Naturally, when the actors hear this they are enraged and so decide begin plotting to embarrass him. While en route to Paris, his escorts decide to stop by an innocent looking inn, an establishment the Comedie Francaise commandeered for the night. Everything that happens is carefully choreographed and planned. Things go well but eventually Garrick, who is an ass, but no fool, catches on. Still he plays along with their game. As the evening progresses a beautiful young girl walks into the inn. Though Garrick doesn't know it, she has nothing to do with the troupe. In the course of giving her a hard time, he falls in love. Eventually she flees and Garrick learns the devastating truth about her. He then wonders how he will ever be able to live and perform without her. Fortunately, things are not nearly as bleak as they seem.more

Audience Reviews for The Great Garrick

Pleasant little comedy with Aherne chomping into the hambone Garrick with much vigor. Keep a sharp eye out for a very young brunette Lana Turner as one of a gaggle of giggling girls in her second film appearance.
