Eli Roth Talks Trailer Trash

Director seeking coconut shells, knights who say "Ni!"

In what may be a cinematic first, director Eli Roth is using the trailer for a movie that doesn't exist as the inspiration for his next project.

Roth's fake trailer for Thanksgiving was one of the most talked-about bits of this year's bloody Quentin Tarantino/Robert Rodriguez double feature, Grindhouse -- and as it turns out, Roth had so much fun teasing Thanksgiving that he decided to assemble an entire feature out of fake trailers. He announced the project, titled Trailer Trash, earlier this year. Now Roth tells Bloody-Disgusting:

Trailer Trash is not a horror film, it's a comedy. It will be very R-rated and completely insane, and I'm producing it with Mike Fleiss (who I did both "Hostel" films with), and writing it with my friends Jeff Rendell (my "Thanksgiving" co-writer, who also played The Pilgrim), Noah Belson (my co-creator on "The Rotten Fruit,") and my brother Gabe, who's collaborated with me on everything I've ever done.

I want to make a film like "Monty Python and the Holy Grail," which I consider to be the greatest achievement in the history of cinema. The best part is I get to shoot some new THANKSGIVING scenes, as well as other holiday slasher films I've always dreamed of making but never would because they'd completely ruin me. I can't wait to shoot!

Roth confirms that MGM will be releasing Trailer Trash on August 22.

Eh... I liked the trailers in Grindhouse and such... but a whole move made out of em.... makes me raise my eyebrows... and the fact that theyre all made by the same guy...

the thing that Made Grindhouses trailers good was the mix of styles, and the people that made them... and the fact that it was only 3 to 4 of them in rapid succession...

can Eli do it?

Yes.. .but Id rather see a full length Thanksgiving...

I'm excited. This is a pretty unique idea that will either fail horribly or end up a classic. Eli roth rocks and I can't wait to see what kind of insane gore/comedy he can come up with.

If he can adopt the random, non-sequter (sp?) humor of Python for the horror genre, there is definate potential here. Then again, haven't we said that about all of Roth's films at some point?

Personally, I thought Hostel 2 was underrated, it wasn't the best movie ever, but it deserved better that what it got (slammed by most critics, relatively poor box office). Trailer trash will either succeed spectacularly, or fail spectacularly, there's no in between with this type of project. Personally, I'm cautiously optimistic.

Reminds me kind of the old 'Kentucky Fried Movie' and the not-as-good 'Amazon Woman on the Mood.' Can't say this will be AWESOME but it would be nice if we got some decent, creative parody as opposed to the glut of lame, Zucker style "Sports Movie."

why is roth comparing this idea to the holy grail? it sounds like its going to have no narrative structure at all. while cabin fever was an impressive debut, roth's incessant need to disgust people (and in so doing exercise some apparent personal demons) has undercut his potential as a filmmaker. There was absolutely no need for hostel part two, as evidenced by the lackluster response critically and financially. now, instead of challenging himself to make a fully-developed film, he's taking the easy way out by playing with a dozen different concepts. It's a lot easier to make a trailer, or even a bunch of them, than it is to create a story arc and evolving characters. I see roth's credibility as a director coming under scrutiny, and rightfully so. this will do for him what grindhouse did for tarantino: plant the seed of doubt as to whether or not he's still got the touch.

as long as he has enough material...i'm game. i just hope its more hostel 1 type of entertainment than the completely toned down 2. that flick was like hostel 1 went through a christian car wash and was wiped clean of any kind of immoral entertainment whatsoever. love the teasing of hot chics and .4 seconds of b33b. can it be more obvious he toned down the rest of it for the mpaa just to get the bobbit scene in there...

Roth is a moron. Sadly, a lot of other people are ALSO morons, which is why "Hostel" made (compared to it's production costs) decent money. But even morons catch on eventually, which is why "Hostel II" completely bombed. Me, I'd love to see him make a "Thanksgiving" full-length movie, because it would be such a complete and total failure that it might finally end his odious movie "career".

In fact im a complete idiot who would never pay to watch a good movie, and thank god for those few people out there who think that me and eli roth and the rest of our sick brothers and sisters should just kinda...disapear. im hyped for this, ill sit through this, ill go to church the next morning, piss on the pastor, do a bunch of hallucinatory drugs, go out and shoot tons of people and tortue naked chicks and maybe even EAT A BABY or THREE, just because you know...im a fool right? babies...yummy stuff

I can't say I'm not a bit excited. Like him or not, at least Eli Roth tries new stuff for his movies, something that I certainly appreciate. Gambling's a risky thing to do with moviemaking, but that's why they're called gambles, right? Until I've seen Trailer Trash for myself and pronounced it awful, I'll continue to defend Eli and this movie, if only for its creative edge.
