Despite some early indications from the two Cusacks and Arkin that it's going to be funny, it winds up an unholy mess that becomes steadily more incoherent -- morally, dramatically, and conceptually.

Yet another disappointment! Grosse Pointe Blank is full of possibilities (a great hook, a sharp cast, and a wry cynicism that is shamefully lacking from film these days) but comes up short on all sides.0

The story-telling is sloppy. The post-production got a little untidy too, with so many 1980s hit tunes thrown on the soundtrack that the music changes almost as often as the camera angle.

Cusack's talents are delicate and appealing, but not propulsive enough to lead the movie to triumph.

As a whole, this film only succeeds in making extraordinary people and situations to look banal.

If you can ignore the tiresome romance and the incessant playing of largely inane music on the soundtrack, Grosse Point Blank has much to recommend it.

It's a sad day when an actor who's totally, beautifully in touch with his dark side finds himself stuck in a movie that's scared of its own shadow.

The coy, oh-so-hip tone of the title persists through the whole strained contrivance.

This movie has the jaunty good cheer of another great movie about hit men, Prizzi's Honor. And that is high praise indeed.

The film takes the form but not the feel of a comic thriller. It's quirkier than that.

The film offers sufficient small pleasures to make it worth enduring the less effective elements. As a result, while Grosse Pointe Blank fails to deliver a fullisade, at least the chamber's not empty, either.
