Critic Consensus: Guardians of the Galaxy is just as irreverent as fans of the frequently zany Marvel comic would expect -- as well as funny, thrilling, full of heart, and packed with visual splendor.

Credit too must go to director James Gunn who puts his individual stamp on the film while operating within Marvel's house style.

James Gunn's first foray into big-budget movie making succeeds despite focusing on characters largely unknown to mainstream audiences and provides some of the most genuinely affecting moments of any Marvel film to date.

Gunn keeps the action moving at a pace that's sometimes exhausting but amidst all the explosions and the crashing spaceships and exploding cityscapes there's usually room for a quick quip or laugh-out-loud gag.

Audience Reviews for Guardians of the Galaxy

The type of irreverent Marvel superhero movie that we were all waiting for but have not yet admitted, and it is a wonder to see how it combines so organically a zany, quirky sense of humor with thrilling action and good unsentimental drama (like the awesome opening scene).

All around good sci-fi fun film. The pacing was a bit off and it seemed as though there were too many characters to follow along, but it is definitely worth watching.

Guardians was a victim of hype for me. I wanted to see it in theaters because everyone was telling me how amazing it was, but I just never got to it. After watching it, I can say it is overrated but enjoyable. Most people told me it was the best Marvel film to date and I highly disagree. While the special effects and action are typically top notch, the story leaves alot to be desired. Characters motivations change in an instant and it is completely unbelievable. Obviously the characters themselves all have unique and interesting personalities and there's a couple memorable ones, but I found the film lacking the punch necessary to take it from good to great. I still prefer The Avengers or the first Iron Man as the top of the Marvel canon so far.
