A dramatic account of three women and their lives, seen through the looking glass of sex, words, madness, death, and family, Guilty of Romance - the new crime noir from the award-winning director Sion Sono (Love Exposure, Cold Fish) - tells the tale of three women entangled in a mystery...a mystery that is the gate to a hell -bound love like no other! The whole is about one-quarter as good as Bunuel's Belle de Jour, which its plot vaguely resembles.
It's a film I primarily watched with my jaw in my lap wondering what the hell I was going to witness next.
One gets the sense the director has become so enamoured the details that he's lost sight of the destination..
Sono uses seemingly incompatible materials to construct a patchwork film as grotesquely hybrid as the corpses at its centre. It may be overlong and not a little bloated, but its sleaze both conceals and embodies moments of great sublimity.
More of a conversational set piece than anything else, it's more for people interested in the role of female sexuality in Japanese culture than your average moviegoer.
Filmed in garish colours like an explosion in a paint factory, it's more style than content, but diverting all the same.
I'm starting to get the impression that Sion Sono is just really good at dressing up nonsense. An indisputably talented filmmaker and gut-churner, he knows how to make the audience putty in his hands. But to what end?
