Prior to the outbreak of the second Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945), the Japnese first invaded China's northeast in 1931, commonly known in the English-speaking world as "Manchuria." As Manchurian refugees pour into the city of Shanghai, playwright Tian Han and young composer Nie Er find inspiration of the highest order.
