There's hardly any action, and, understandably, it feels stage-y at times, but the weight of the subject and solid, heartfelt delivery will keep you grounded through to the tearful end.

In Tribeca, located blocks away from Ground Zero, Manhattan Flea Theater's Artistic Director, Jim Simpson, decided to commission a play from his friend Anne Nelson, a Columbia School of Journalism professor, after hearing her true story of meeting with a New York City Fire Captain to help him write eulogies for his fallen fire fighters. Her story became THE GUYS, which has now been adapted and directed by Simpson for the big screen and stars Sigourney Weaver (Simpson's wife) as Joan, a freelance journalist living and working in Manhattan during the days following September 11th. Joan is horrified by the tragedy, but feels like an incapable bystander, until she meets Nick (Anthony LaPaglia) a veteran New York City Fire Captain who must speak at numerous memorial services for his fallen men. Paralyzed by grief, the big-hearted blue-collar hero is incapable of expressing his true feelings until Joan begins to carefully elicit touching stories and anecdotes from him. Joan sensitively responds to Nick's colorful and mournful memories and slowly the very real human lives of his firefighters begin to take the shape of the eulogies he must deliver. Together, the two New Yorkers, affected by September 11th in very different ways, comfort and heal each other in this very personal and moving tribute to the fallen heroes of 9-11. [More]

Reviews for The Guys
This is a beautiful and powerful film that is an incredible memorial to all the heroes from 9/11...they paint a picture with words that is so clear you really have a sense of these men you never see.
LaPaglia’s ability to convey grief and hope works with Weaver’s sensitive reactions to make this a two-actor master class.
A very well-meaning movie, and it will stand in future years as an eloquent memorial to the World Trade Center tragedy.
This isn't a narrative film -- I don't know if it's possible to make a narrative film about September 11th, though I'm sure some will try -- but it's as close as anyone has dared to come.
A graceful, moving tribute to the courage of New York's finest and a nicely understated expression of the grief shared by the nation at their sacrifice.
Reveals how important our special talents can be when put in service of of others. It also shows how deeply felt emotions can draw people together across the walls that might otherwise separate them.
The movie is emotionally convincing, and it's a thoughtful memorial to firefighters who died in the tower collapse.
Benefits immeasurably from the strong presence of Weaver and LaPaglia, who turn in quietly affecting performances.
Besides the fact that it's about 9/11, it's also an effective film because you learn something about the lives of the firemen who are willing to lay down their lives for our safety, which was true long before the year 2001
An unsentimental albeit heartfelt eulogy to the firefighters who paid the ultimate price while saving New Yorkers.
If anyone needs reminding of those profound post-9/11 feelings, now or later, The Guys will be there to do it.
