Critics Consensus: Hall Pass Flunks

Summary

This week at the movies, we've got midlife crises (Hall Pass, starring Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikis) and automotive vengeance (Drive Angry, starring Nicolas Cage and Amber Heard). What do the critics have to say? In the past, the Farrelly brothers' deft mix of raunch and heart made for a potent comedic combination. However, with their latest, Hall Pass, critics say the brothers' aim is off; though the movie has some very funny moments, it's bogged down by a little too much gross stuff and a little too much sentimentality. With a title like Drive Angry, you pretty much know what to expect -- lots of action, and Nicolas Cage doing his unhinged thing, with subtlety and nuance left in the dust. Back to Article

The billboards I've been seeing for Hall Pass make it look like a cheaply made "comedy" and the Farrelly's have had far to many misfires of late, so I will pass. I didn't want to see drive angry however the more I see the ads for it, the better it looks, as a mindless stupid fun B-movie, plus the director made My Bloody Valentine 3D, which was a bit of a guilty pleasure for me, so now I'd like to see it. Other than that catching up on Another Year this week as well as Cedar Rapids. Next week looks great with Rango, Take Me Home Tonight, and The Adjustment Bureau

My Bloody Valentine was great 3D B movie. This guy knows how to make the screen pop.

Come on! Cage's character in Drive Angry is named John Milton! You can't be mad at the intentionally awful literary references. In no way does this film take itself seriously. You can forgive a lot when you know they're just trying to entertain you with its awfulness. That's why I like Southland Tales. Because it's just balls-out nuts and never tries to make sense of every idea it throws at you.

Probably just as well that this week's releases are pretty much stinkers across the board since everyone will be glued to Oscar coverage all weekend.

Drive Angry came much closer to being rated fresh than i would've thought possible.

Hall Pass premise: Two middle-aged undersexed married guys get to have seven days to live as bachelors as granted by their fed-up wives. Really? I've written on this bolg before that movies test you suspension, but this is asphyxiating you by your suspenders (not that anybody wears those). The Farley bros. last outing was a mess and this just proves that they are sinking into oblivion. Common guys, we know ya got it in there. "There's Something About Mary" was one of the funniest movies I've ever seen, and I really liked "Me, Myself and Irene," but you gotta get your grove back, man. Stop watching that dribble that Aptow spews out and get back to your roots.

I'm seeing "Drive Angry" for two reasons, one is because William Fichter's role might be bigger in it, and two because I enjoyed Cage's "Gone in 60 Seconds" despite the low 25 % given by the critics as opposed to the viewers who gave it more than 70 %!

Can't trust critics with comedies, almost missed Due Date but thankfully I got to sit through that deliciously crude picture. Will probably see Hall Pass soon.

Of Gods and Men looks decent, wonder if they'll pick it up here.

Pretty rotten year so far. To think a Justin Bieber biography would be the only fresh movie so far....

Oh, Drive Angry is in 3D ? Too Bad, I don't check out movies in 3D. I don't pay more for sh*t I like less. I didn't go see Green Hornet because of the 3D crap.

Drive Angry has much better 3-D than Green Hornet. You made the right call skipping Green Hornet. But I'd actually recommend Drive Angry, as long as you go into the theater in the right mood.
