Twenty years after the original HALLOWEEN, Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis), now the headmistress of a Northern California private school under an assumed name, is still struggling with the terrifying memories of the psychotic killer Michael Myers. That horror becomes a reality once again when Michael returns, embarking on a murderous roadtrip from Illinois to California, killing three more people and stealing a victim's car before threatening the lives of Laurie's rebellious son (Josh Hartnett), his girlfriend (Michelle Williams), and the school security guard (LL Cool J). It's up to Laurie to conquer her internal demons and end Michael's evil. And a conveniently placed ax might just help her accomplish the task.... [More]

Kevin Williamson's Scream knockoffs aside, none of the endless parade of multisequel, blood-splashin' horror schlock has lived up to the high-quality, low-budget fright-filled fun of the original Halloween. Until now.

H20 is compelling, due in large part to an outstanding, mature performance by Jamie Lee Curtis, returning to the series for the first time since Halloween II.

The scary slasher-movie genre has been ratcheted up several notches with the release today of Halloween: H20.

H20 has two things going for it. One of them is a powerhouse performance by one of the great icons of contemporary horror film, Jamie Lee Curtis. And the other is the wordless presence of the bulky, bemasked heavy known as Michael Meyers.

H2O successfully captures the foreboding mood of Carpenter's 1978 original before eventually settling for the obvious. And at 86 minutes, it's just too short.

The showdown is grueling, long, with too many climaxes and improbable events, but Laurie's up for it. And that's what you love about her. She does not quit. She's bound and determined to decapitate his ass.

Here is a film that ultimately proves perhaps, for right now, there is still some life left in the typical slasher formula.

Having seen the film several times in the years since, my rating would now stand at a mildly positive 2.5 stars. Yes, the movie is too short, but it is also stylish and suspenseful enough to recommend.

Yes, it's hokey stuff, and yes, the hundredth or so time they pull the "you turn around and there's someone right behind you!" scare, it does tend to wear. But what did you expect? Halloween?

Halloween H20 is yet another sequel that cannot match up to the glories of its precursor and, in fact, is considerably less hair-raising than recent horror films like Scream, Scream 2, and even Mimic.

Now that they have produced something vaguely enjoyable, hopefully the film makers will let the series rest in peace.

All in all, if you're a horror fan, and like all of the other Kevin Williamson-based films, there's no good reason why you shouldn't truly enjoy this one.

Halloween: H20 is substantially superior compared to any of the non-Carpenter follow-ups.

The selfish pea brains who brought their bright-eyed infant to...this violent horror movie deserve a private, late-night visit from the uncompromising Michael Myers.

Halloween: H20 is as stylish and scary as it is ultra-violent. It brings back a stunning Jamie Lee Curtis in the role that made her a star and it's a work of superior craftsmanship in all aspects.

Taken as a sequel to Halloween, this is just above average; taken as a sequel to Halloween Two, which is where most of its backstory comes from, it looks terrific.
