Critics Consensus: Hancock Isn't Signature Smith

Plus, Kit Kittredge: An American Girl is Certified Fresh.

This week at the movies, we've got moody superheroes (Hancock, starring Will Smith and Charlize Theron), and cub reporters (Kit Kittredge: An American Girl, starring Abigail Breslin and Julia Ormond). What do the critics have to say?

It seems like a can't-miss prospect: a moody, conflicted superhero, unloved by the public despite his best efforts, played by Will Smith, aka Mr. Independence Day. However, great ideas are a dime a dozen, and critics say Hancock never fully takes flight. An attempt at a subversive take on caped crusader mythos, Smith has super-strength and a drinking problem; however, he learns to show a softer side after saving the life of a public relations expert. The pundits say Smith is solid as always, but the film quickly abandons its clever premise in favor of typical action sequences. Additionally, its shifts in tone -- from wry comedy to sentiment -- don't quite cohere. At 35 percent on the Tomatometer, Hancock is not one of Smith's signature films.

"Hadouken!"

With the Fourth of July on the horizon, it seems like an apt time to celebrate the can-do, go-get-'em American spirit. With that in mind, critics say you could do a lot worse than Kit Kittredge: An American Girl, an old-school, family-friendly charmer. Abigail Breslin stars as the title character, a sharp, kind, inquisitive pre-teen whose journalistic aspirations come in handy: she attempts to solve a mystery and, in the process, save her family's house and exonerate some falsely-accused fellow citizens. The pundits say Kit is a gentle, heartfelt tale that's both a delivery system for wholesome messages and a surprisingly moving drama. At 79 percent on the Tomatometer, the Certified Fresh Kit Kittredge has Girl power to spare.

Also opening this week in limited release:

The surreal black comedy Kabluey, starring Lisa Kudrow and Scott Prendergast (who also directs), is at 100 percent.

The French thriller Tell No One, starring Kristin Scott Thomas and Francois Cluzet, is at 93 percent.

Gonzo: the Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson, Alex Gibney's documentary portrait of the iconic gonzo journalist, is at 86 percent.

The Wackness, the coming-of-age story of a drug dealer in mid-1990s New York, starring Ben Kingsley, Famke Janssen, and Josh Peck, is at 70 percent.

Diminished Capacity, a bittersweet comedy about a newspaperman recovering from a concussion starring Matthew Broderick and Virginia Madsen, is at 17 percent.

"The pundits say Smith is solid as always"

Seriously? Will Smith always plays Will Smith; how hard is that? I've gotten tired of his shtick. It worked in MiB, but has been wearing thin ever since.

Saw the movie last night and I have to say that it was pretty good. I was afraid it would be horrible but it wasn't. Smith did a great job, imo.

Will Smith is my favorite actor and I always enjoy his movies. Out of all his movies I've seen the only ones I'd that are really bad would be Shark Tale and Wild Wild West. Other than that his other movie have been pretty solid. I'm disappointed Hancock wasn't fresh but that still won't stop me from seeing it. Maybe its just not as good as his previous films.

I'm sure Hancock is every bit as good as good as Will Smith's other films... which means it's really, really, lame.

It's good to see that Mathew Broderick is still making crap films.

Will Smith is one of the most bankable actors in Hollywood but I guess he can't save this film with all the other competition around targeting the same demographic.

It would be interesting to see what would happen if there was actually any competiton for Hancock this weekend (meaning movies that are opening this weekend). Since every studio has stayed out of his way, he has been handed a #1 spot even if the entire film is Will Smith sitting on a toilet taking a crap... and, based on the reviews, it isn't much better than that.

too many superhero movies are coming out all at once.

Yeah your right, even though I will probably see it because I am lazy and got no job lol. But if someone is out there who hardly goes to the movies they should probably skip this to see good quality super hero flicks like Iron Man, HB II next week, and of course The Dark Knight which we all know will be amazing. Also Roger Ebert and Peter Travers liked Hancock, so that is kind of another reason why I will see it, and ofcourse if I am going to see a movie I know theres a big chance I wont like it then I have way too much time on my hands.

Pity they fumbled the ball with Hancock. I guess this will go down as a good example of how a genus of a pitch can become a lackluster film.

Berg, thanks for ruining a great idea. Mann should drop him as his protege, take on Nolan. Now Nolan is Manns protege, I see a lot of the same stuff in Nolans work compared to Mann.

Berg just plain out sucks, mediocre director who shouldn't have been given the greenlight for a blockbuster.

I saw it last night. I liked it alot. He was very funny. The CGI could have been done better but it was not bad. I've definitley seen much worse this year.

Well, I got to see Hancock yesterday at the special advance screening and I would say that though it is not the best product of Will Smith it was not at all a bad movie. I kinda liked it ... as a matter of fact it was more entertaining than Wanted !! Well thats my 2 cents !!

Cheers ~~

Saw it last night as well. To me, it starts off awesome - it's fun, and sarcastic and it's different from any other superhero flick that's come out. But then it starts to take itself seriously, and then it kinda gets terrible. Really, really terrible.

I was surprised over how much Will Smith cursed in that movie - I was always under the impression he was like, an advocate of not needing to curse in stuff. But him and Bateman were definitely what keeps the movie afloat as long as it manages too before being bludgeoned to death with the crap script.

I'd give it 2.5 outta 5 stars if I did that sort of thing.

Just saw it. I can see how people wouldn't like the second part of the movie. It was still entertaining. CAn't wait til the Dark Knight.

I just saw Hancock last night too...though it wasn't great, its far from terrible IMO. Smith was pretty good as a surly super hero and it was actually pretty damn funny. Bateman was great too. All in all, not a bad flick to hold over all of those waiting for the greatness of TDK.

Sleeper

Sleeper on 07-3-2008 08:41 AM

Hancock unfortunately fails at being entertaining. If it can be compared with any other superhero movies, it would be pretty close to Spider-Man 3 and Hulk (1993), while the CGI is even worse and the shaking camera is just as silly as in Battlefield Earth.

Spider Man 3 Hulk Battlefield Earth Wild Wild West 28 Days (not 28 Days Later) = Hancock
