Five Favorite Films With Billy Ray Cyrus
Summary
Art imitates life (and vice versa) in Hannah Montana: The Movie, in which teen idol Miley Cyrus stars as the titular character, a 16-year-old A-list celebrity desperately trying to balance stardom with her normal life. That normal life is her "real" life as Miley Stewart, a high schooler whose pop identity is only known to family and friends and who is about to get a wake-up call in the form of an extended stay in the homegrown Tennessee countryside where she grew up, courtesy of dad Robby Ray Stewart (played by Miley's real-life father, country music star-turned-actor Billy Ray Cyrus). RT talked to the elder Cyrus about his favorite films, his transition from "Achy Breaky Heart" recording artist to Hollywood thespian, and how he credits David Lynch (and a letter from Johnny Cash) with helping daughter Miley become the teen entertainment phenomenon that she is today. jokerboy1991 writes: on Apr 06 2009 06:44 PM Oy Vey, Twilight?!??!?!?!? I won't go into that, but I bet Jen went crazy when the Achy Breaky Heart Man said Twilight. Never been much of a David Lynch fan, maybe because I hate Dune so much but I just always thought his movies had bad narratives. But I can see why people like Lynch, but he's just not for me. Pretend it never happened. Kill all those involved. WTF. Your God-Awful new show and now you ask BILLY RAY CYRUS about his favorite pics. and TWILIGHT is in his top 5? HORSE WHISPERER? *breaks into convulsions* (Reply to this) |

shane f. writes: on Apr 06 2009 07:59 PM It sounds as if he's trying a bit to hard to come across as hip & trendy with the teenagers and not a guy who hasn't realized he's already middle-aged. Simple list without much thought, but it is 'his'. He doesn't come across as able to express his views/reasons for his picks. Everyone seems to be 'an inspiration & role model'for him. Ask someone interesting (Adam West, Michael Caine, Steve Martin, etc) for their list. Billy Ray Cyrus? LOL! (Reply to this) |

jeff h. writes: on Apr 06 2009 08:06 PM In reply to this comment (#2414463) yeah, i'm not a lynch fan either. his films are too incoherent, messy, and don't follow any kind of narratives. (Reply to this) |

But seriously, that is a good movie- call it a guilty pleasure if you will... Jeff H. that is my exact problem with Lynch films, I can enjoy some of them like Wild At Heart but I generally find his movies frustrating. (Reply to this) |

ledawg1138 writes: on Apr 06 2009 09:06 PM My dad really loves movies. There are few films he dosen't like. But he made it quite clear, the two worst films he's ever scene were "Your Friends and Neighbors" and "Blue Velvet". "Twilight"? There's no escaping that film! His list so whatever. But I gotta say...dude looks like a lady...oh wait that's from people whoare talented. Well Billy Ray still looks a bit feminine. jokerboy, you should see "The Elephant Man". I don't like Lynch but I found that to be a very powerful film, perhaps so emotionally unsettling it's hard to watch, but it's very well made. (Reply to this) |

jokerboy1991 writes: on Apr 06 2009 09:22 PM In reply to this comment (#2414694) I never said I saw Blue Velvet, I haven't. But I have seen- Dune, Wild At Heart, Mulholland Drive, and Elephant Man. But yeah Ledawg, Elephant Man is really good. I just don't think Lynch's movies have a narrative, I think he's more interested at times of how cool or weird a shot looks. Also, I think people here can decide who the smarter/maturer one is, Me or you who thinks a list is credible if it has Twilight on it. Someone who never bashes anyone (obviously me) or someone who does for no reason except to get attention (yes thats you). (Reply to this) |

BowieSwimmer writes: on Apr 07 2009 05:14 AM Cyrus had a very bit part in "Mulholland Drive," essentially playing a brute. And yes, Lynch's films don't always follow a narrative, but at many times I think that's simply because Lynch wants to explore another avenue in cinema. And doesn't think that adhering to the regular confines of how a movie should unravel, so instead he merely does what he wants with the screen. I'm going to say that if you think "Blue Velvet" is one of the worst films ever, you haven't watched it the correct way. Or you simply just don't understand what's going on. Masterful film. Though, this really isn't the place for a Lynch rant; I'm obviously a fan. Billy Ray kind of surprises me here, and I have to applaud some of the choices he made. I feel like if someone like Helen Mirren mad a list, and put "Horse Whisperer" as one of her films because no matter how unworthy it is, its a ridiculous guilty pleasure of hers, you'd all praise her for not filling her list with revered classics. I'm not a fan of Billy Ray, but I think this list works very well. Two Thumbs Way Up. Also, is the inclusion of "Twilight" really a surprise? I mean, he is starring in a film aimed at adolescent girls arriving in the next few weeks, no too late to keep working on improving your stock with the fan base... (Reply to this) |

jokerboy1991 writes: on Apr 07 2009 12:03 PM In reply to this comment (#2415377) Yeah those are Lynch's obvious intentions, I'll admit he succeeds at that, but some people are not into his style. I never said I hated Lynch, I really liked Elephant Man, I liked Wild At Heart, but I down right hate Dune. I have not seen Blue Velvet but it seems to be a love it or hate it movie. But yeah I do think that Wild at Heart and Dune are messes, yes of course there weird. He's obviously going for symbolism when he sides steps to do something weird but I just dont think it flows well, but at times it just comes across badly. I just think his weird moments just don't fit in his movies well. I was watching I'm Not There the other day, and it has scenes weird scenes like Lynch but it fits into the story perfectly and its symbolism comes across clearly. I can see why people love Lynch and I can see why people hate him. (Reply to this) |

kaike_67 writes: on Apr 07 2009 12:08 PM This guy's just a rednecked pimp living off his annoying, stupid, spoiled daughter who, thanks to one of the biggest corporations in the whole world shoving her down kids' throats and absolutely nothing else, has become a million times richer and more famous than he's ever been in his entire non-career in just a couple of years. And by the way, before anyone says anything in her defense, being a teenage girl doesn't necessarily translate into being as annoying, stupid and spoiled as that little brat. There are real life Juno McGuffs out there, you know. (Reply to this) |

Don't Tase Me Bro writes: on Apr 07 2009 01:28 PM 'Blue Velvet' gave us 'Twin Peaks'. 'Twin Peaks' gave us 'X-Files'...the 'Files' gave us 'Lost' and a slew of other television shows. Lynch is one of the oddest, most intelligent, but misunderstood geniuses of cinema since Truffaut. He's either hated or loved. A true auteur. Billy Ray Cyrus is a turd. A line-dancin', mullet-flippin' (or flat-ironed-haired--pick your decade), Disney-tool turd. Flush him America. For the love of all that is good and holy, flush him. And his daughter too. Ashron writes: on Apr 07 2009 05:38 PM I find it interesting that everybody on here talks about how much Miley Cyrus sucks, and I'd be willing to bet money that no one on here is in her target demographic. The Monkees, Sam and Dave, Hanson, Miley Cyrus. Take your pick. There will always be teen idols that the older generation doesn't like. Doesn't mean they don't have talent. At least Miley works for her fame unlike, say, Paris Hilton. (Reply to this) |

BatsInTheBelfry writes: on Apr 07 2009 06:25 PM In reply to this comment (#2414730) They follow a narrative, they're just out of order like a dream would be. I love figuring out the timelines of Lynch's movies and figuring out all they're little secrets. Now, Mulholland Dr. is really the only one that works out perfectly with no loose ends (at least from my interpretation) but the experiments are admirable. All that being said, Lynch is definaitely a love him or hate him director. Like Tarantino, Luhrmann, Cronenburg, Rodriguez or Wes Anderson. When you have an extremely specific style and an uncompromising vision, your films will inevitably be similar and limit your audience. Whoever said he had no talent is crazy. Love him or hate him, the man can direct. This was the guy that Lucas hand picked to direct Return of the Jedi (though his schedule prevented him from doing so) and is generally considered one of the best directors of his generation. He may be bat-**** crazy, but he has talent. (Reply to this) |

jokerboy1991 writes: on Apr 07 2009 06:40 PM In reply to this comment (#2415949) I'm not going to put down anyone who loves Lynch, I understand why they do. I get what he is trying to do, but I generally have a hard time digging his style. Its ludicrous to say he has not talent though, because he is very talented obviously. He's made some films I have liked, but not loved, but I think I may never like Lynch very much because I hate Dune so much. (Reply to this) |

shane f. writes: on Apr 08 2009 04:56 PM Billy Ray is one of the USA's best actors and a great singer as well. He has a lot in common with Clint Eastwood and Hugh Jackman. He's just a normal, average guy who is very talented and also happens to have a very talented daughter. Women love him and American men want to be like him. Billy is a very respected actor who has had a very hard life, fighting his way out of poverty and climbing the success ladder. Rumour has it that he'll be playing alongside Ben Kingsley in 'King Lear' in 2010. (Reply to this) |

"Bonnie & Clyde" and "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" are safe picks, but smashing "Blue Velvet" and "Twilight" right next to each other takes a lot of balls. "Blue Velvet" is simply amazing. And he's right that "Twilight" is pretty killer--killer comedy, that is! :D Watching "Twilight" and reading the books is so fun!--it's so ridiculous and junky, but it's like a big bagful of M&M's--I just want to gobble it all down, however unsubstantial it is!
