Parental Guidance: Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters

We give you what you need to know about the family-friendliness of this week's new releases.

This week in theaters, we've got a big screen fairy tale adaptation about a pair of vigilante witch killers. Now, we all know that much of the Grimm brothers' bibliography is filled with violent tales, but is Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters safe for the whole family? Read on to find out.

New In Theaters:

Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters

14%

What's it about? Years after escaping from the gingerbread house, Hansel (Jeremy Renner) and Gretel (Gemma Arterton) are a sibling vigilante squad, ridding the German countryside of witches with the same relish displayed by Charles Bronson in Death Wish.

Who's it for? It's rated R "for strong fantasy horror violence and gore, brief sexuality/nudity and language." Don't be fooled by the fairy tale title -- we're pretty far from Mother Goose territory here.

Is it any good? We'd love to tell you more about this one, but it doesn't screen for critics until later in the week, which is never a good sign.

You know, why do they even make these things to warn parents. Its the parents who should know better before taking their kids to see a movie like this.

Parents don't really seem to care. I saw a father walking his son out of a showing for Django Unchained. It is depressing how terrible some parents are.

I guess parents now a day don't care about the rating of a movie. At least they should first look it up online before you decide to bring your kid. I remember when there we're a bunch a kids and at least one parent going in to see Ted last summer. And the kids looked under 10, big mistake. Don't let the title and character of the movie fool ya!

If I had a kid, I probably would have taken him to Django as well - as long as he thinks it's fun...

whats terrible about that .. you just saw a father and his son walking out of a great oscar nominated film .... there is nothing terrible about parents letting kids watch adult movies ... i watched terminator, fright night, predator and many more when i was 5-7 years old, and i turned out a fine respectable man ... parents just need to trust that their kids understand the fantasy of movies and know its not real, its all acting ... its just movies, its just viewing entertainment, nothing immoral about it ... now a terrible parent is one who completely neglects their kids and doesnt notice or pay any mind to their childs descent into drugs, alcohol, gang violence, underage sex, etc ... i never had those problems no matter what movies i watched because i had great parents who taught me well and always cared about me and payed attention to me.

I agree, as long as you can handle it its fine. When I was a kid, I saw many R rated movies such as Planes, Trains, Automobiles and Blazing Saddles for example. I had no problem with the language, drugs, sex or violence in those movies.

Saw 2 families leave during Zero Dark Thirty, and this is after it had been out for weeks. The kids were around the same age, 8-9 years old.

Just got to know your kids. Not all kids are the same. I was watching American Werewolf and Missing in Action when I was 8 or younger, but you take certain 15 year olds to a horror movie and they leave traumatized.

I know, right? Yet so many parents these days aren't willing to check and see that, oh wait, this movie might not be good for the kids to see! Not to mention any names: TED! I still can't believe the number of parents that went with their kids to see that!

Probably under. If they're waiting this long to screen it, that means their hoping it will be carried on star power/premise alone. Kind of like Abraham Lincoln:Vampire Hunter. That scored low, although I did see it on DVD and thought it was at least watchable.

I'm gonna say over, I think Renner and Arterton can make it at least mildly enjoyable.

Yeah that was the main issue for that movie. Although a vampire throwing a horse=Hysterical. Also, for some reason when the vampire screamed "MR. PRESIDENT!" in the last fight my friends and I could not stop laughing.

I appreciate what you're doing RT, but I still find that http://www.commonsensemedia.org/ offers a FAR better and comprehensive service when it comes to parental guidance, dissecting topics and even offering discussion questions -- as opposed to simply a couple sentences about the film's plot and rating, which can be easily found on the movie's profile page.

Not that this is a bad thing, but ... just putting this out there.

I saw the preview the other day, didn't look too bad. I enjoyed Tommy Wirkola's Dead Snow, it had a good 'vibe' to it. Hopefully it comes across in this too.

Saw it tonight....I wish I could assuage your fears, but it is exactly what it looks like: a bloody, gory mess with some semblance of story now and again, but mostly poor dialogue and senseless brutality, although the witch kills are pretty epic. I would guess after seeing it, 22% when all is said and done...not a good movie, just a fun one

That's weird. It's 14A up here in Canada, (which is the equivalent of PG-13 in the States). Heck even ads I've seen for the movie say "PG-13".

Actually, Paramount has both a PG-13 and R rated cuts of the movie, but they decided to release the R one instead.

I'm amazed that they'd do this. Usually it is the other way around - R rated movies are whittled down to PG-13 in order to attract a larger audience. I wonder what the rationale is behind this decision; I'm sure there is a reason.

I sawed the opening weekend of this film yesterday with my brother and we enjoyed it. Nothing excellent or anything, but the chemistry between Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton completely nailed it! Even the action moments they had together!
