Consensus: Though the plot of Happenstance is basically a gimmick, the film is a fun, light-hearted trifle.

The concept, as treated in the film, is best explained by an aging drifter who walks through a Parisian park saying that sometimes the most random, stupid act can alter the course of the world. He goes on to say that something as minor as the batting of a butterfly's wings over the Atlantic can cause a hurricane over the Pacific. (This is an explanation of the French title, which translates to "The Batting of the Wings of a Butterfly.") In short, all things are intrinsically connected. And in this film, the tiniest action performed by one character triggers a series of events that eventually impact another character. There is a broad cross-section of over 20 extremely quirky characters in the film, all of whom are deeply superstitious and believe strongly in fate, which enhances the comedy, surprise, and strangeness of each new scenario. Granny gives Luc some fresh-baked macaroons, and tells him not to tell his mother. He tells his mother, who steals the tin, tastes a cookie, and throws it out the window. A pigeon eats it, then flies across the city and poops directly onto a photograph taken by some Russian tourists, who go into a photo shop, asking the salesgirl to fix it. When the girl in the shop tries to clean off the photo, she realizes that the man in the picture is her long-lost love, who she has not seen in ten years. HAPPENSTANCE drifts, careens, floats, and sometimes zooms around the city of Paris, sneaking in and out of the daily lives of its subjects, uncovering with each passing moment a new and entirely bizarre example of destiny. Reviews for Happenstance
Occasionally alternates between inspired and facile, but balances its romantic notions with a touch of cynicism.
Ultimately feels like tiny films glued together by events that often test plausibility.
Sheer mechanism propels Happenstance, but the numerous characters and storylines flow and converge in a gracefully unpredictable and witty manner.
It brims with the charm, wisdom and light touch that have endeared French films to international audiences for more than a century.
Firode comes up with some clever and amusing situations, but his characters are so glum and unlikable it just isn't a whole lot of fun to spend time with then.
Though fancifully constructed, Happenstance is principally the visualization of a concept, and in the end, more of a moving board game than a movie.
You could accuse Happenstance of being just a narrative exercise, but it plays out with such a light touch -- and likable cast -- that you can't help but enjoy the ride.
Feels like a series of gimmicky vignettes cobbled together for a hopefully whimsical effect.
Tatou ... gives a more interesting performance than she did in her overly bossy, fussy title role in Amélie.
A celebration of the surprises that pop up like sidewalk blossoms through the gray surface of daily life, and it is also one of those surprises.
The ensemble cast ... is personable and the Parisian ambiance is catching.
It is the fun of the film that the audience is privy to the perspective usually only enjoyed by the deities, wherein the game of life actually makes sense.
Much of Happenstance comes across as a cinematic parlor game. But what a fun game it is.
Firode's characters are hardly far apart, and their arbitrary connections are seductive but trite.
