Acerbic but never cruel.
Top CriticThe movie's dreadful interior lighting might be passed off as atmospheric or a victim of financing, but it mainly makes for difficult viewing.
The most spot-on scenes show passive-aggressive hipster clerks snorting at Keith's flyers for a comeback fundraiser rave and a city suffocating on its own cool.
The film doesn't seem all that into the subculture it attempts to wryly nostalgize.
The closer Happy Life gets to finally finding any joy in the fans of this passé scene, the more depressing it becomes.
