This stagnating set-up for a finale wallows in self-seriousness. There's so much glumness and lethargy here, a new character--call him Excelsior Lugubrious--emerges from the mega-budget, moody mist, threatening to slay Death himself with Sleep.
The fuck? Thats all I have to say.
Dec 1 - 03:51 PM
WHAT the fuck?
Dec 3 - 10:42 AM
I stand corrected. WHAT the fuck?
Dec 3 - 03:41 PM
Not that I care much, because I thought the movie was awesome, but it would have been nice to see this reach 80%. But, no, there's always got to be an idiot review like this to drag the score back down. This review was crap. I sure hope the time he mentioned the Deadly Hollows was a joke.
Dec 2 - 03:27 AM
The movie sucked. I agree... to those on a personal mission to get it to X%, deal with it... just because you are bedazzled by a movie that could be 1:30 hours long but dragged interminably for an additional hour, doesn't mean every one else is.
Dec 3 - 05:32 PM
A movie is never good nor bad. It's in the eye of the beholder. I think The Last Picture Show is maybe the best movie I've ever seen but to some it might be boring. Everyone has their own tastes. But as your last sentence says, that's the beauty of it. A movie is as good as you think it is.
Dec 3 - 11:17 PM
But what if a film has excellent cinematography, direction, character development, score, editing, pacing, polished visuals etc...? Surely that can be classed as a good film, whether people like it or not.
Dec 15 - 09:58 AM
I for one cannot wait for the Hairy Pooper movies to be over and done with. What a horrible series of movies.
Dec 5 - 09:32 AM
Talking shit on something you clearly never took time to understand. And Hairy Pooper? Grow the fuck up.
Dec 16 - 12:31 PM
And yet you took the time to scour the review talkback section in order to express your general disinterest. Yeah, you're totally not invested.
Dec 18 - 07:39 AM
its actually a great movie. so sorry that it was slow, and dragged on. but it was way necessary. it had a great run, and obviously people love them if they kept making them.

Gibson hit the nail on the head with this review. I don't know what drugs you people have been taking, but I'm inclined to believe it's the one from the bottle labeled "absolute and unswervingly blind loyalty which has utterly clouded any objectivity whatsoever". Either that or you people really have virtually no affinity for a well-paced or entertaining story. This flick was so morose, emotionally-flaccid, slow-moving and needlessly convoluted I found myself hoping somebody would die just to liven things up a bit. Save the blind loyalty for the 5 year-olds, people, this movie was a terrible disappointment and inferior to its predecessors.
Dec 12 - 12:47 PM
Or that could be our solid opinions? And your insults are pathetically childish. Grow up.
Dec 13 - 09:01 AM
This. Part 1 does what most mega-franchise blockbusters tend to ignore: atmosphere, storytelling, and character development. It's not about action or spectacle, but how the characters deal with the situation they are in and mature because of it.
Feb 25 - 03:56 PM
or we just understand that it's only part one of a two part movie. i expected them to handle the split a little better than they did. It pretty much just ended randomly, but I know there is a part 2 and am excited to see it.
Dec 15 - 09:28 AM
its a really good, clever movie but remember they are kids books and movies and should be viewed as such. excellent effects- and i got a few scares too!!
Dec 16 - 06:06 AM
They aren't kids books/movies. The first 2 are, but they get more matured as they go along.
Dec 16 - 12:32 PM
No book is ever written just for children.
Jan 9 - 12:52 AM
its a really good, clever movie but remember they are kids books and movies and should be viewed as such. excellent effects- and i got a few scares too!!and this idiot gave UP more? stick to watching inane US cartoons mate
Dec 16 - 06:07 AM
Wow, you managed to get nothing right in your comment. Harry Potter is no longer a "kids" series. Hasn't been for the last 7 years or so and "Up" is inane? Try again.
Dec 18 - 07:42 AM
I think the movie was great...and I love the books. However, Harry Potter is not strictly speaking a ‚??kids book‚?? or movie. At least in the sense that it‚??s not for all young ages. The first three installments when Harry is between 11-13 feels like a children‚??s book, however the older Harry gets the more mature and darker the content becomes. Lets not forget that the series focuses around a dark lord who wishes to enslave and exterminate a whole race of people---needless to say the seventh book is dark and a lot of people die. I actually think the seventh movie (part 1) has for the first time captured the mood of the books. The movie was great and not for the mere fact that it‚??s kind of a ‚??kid‚??s movie,‚?? but because all the technical details and most importantly, the story came together very well. For the first time, story became more important than special effects and I am very proud of David Yates for making that decision

It is funny how intellectuals think they are speaking intellectually, when in reality they make absolutely no sense whatsoever. So many critics insert, what they think to be, the perfect word to describe their feelings when in fact they are making their statement sound ignorant without realizing that they are full of themselves. The entire Harry Potter series hasn‚??t been the best ever made. But it has been pretty awesome if you consider the scope of what it has accomplished (i.e. keeping the same actors to portray characters since 2001!). This last movie (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1) seems to truly embrace the trials and tribulations of the main characters. Even though there are long scenes of Harry and Hermione staring into the distance, a true reader of the books can ultimately understand what they are thinking at that moment. That‚??s good film making, because the filmmaker, hopefully, has read the book and does their best to portray the feelings the author has written. So to say, ‚??There's so much glumness and lethargy here, a new character--call him Excelsior Lugubrious--emerges from the mega-budget, moody mist, threatening to slay Death himself with Sleep‚?? really doesn‚??t tell us anything does it? It tells us a description of the critic‚??s opinion, somewhat. But it still doesn‚??t make any sense. Who is Excelsior Lugubrious? I read the books and there was no such character was there? What is this critic even saying? Maybe the critic should have said this: ‚??The movie is glum and dark and the lethargy depicts the situation the characters are going through. The movie made a lot of money, but the moodiness of it all was just not for me‚??. That makes more sense. That is a complete thought that should have been written. Brian Gibson, get to the point next time you want to criticize a movie. Otherwise, don‚??t bore the rest of us with your unintelligent critical lore.

First I must say that I love Harry Potter. I love the books...and while the movies haven't been as great as I wanted, I'm a true devotee. I also think that part 1 of Harry Potter 7 is the first of the films to truly capture the mood of the Harry Potter books. They've gone beyond just being an okay movie to making a great movie that I'm hoping will be nominated for a few things this year. Now that I've addressed that---I want to address your statements about "intellectuals." I simply do not understand why people read reviews if they will be upset by the things these reviewers are writing. These are people who have studied filmmaking and they understand the work that goes behind making a great film...and when they don't see the effort being made, they say so. Does that mean they're always right?....No, it does not. I for example think Brian Gibson missed the whole point of the movie. However, critics use their expertise to form an opinion just as you use whatever expertise you have to form your opinions. I've just notice so much ranting on here whenever people dislike a review and I simply don't understand why. I love the Harry Potter books more than anything...and while I might engage in a passionate conversation about them, I'm not going to start calling people names over them or make fun of their "intellect." At the end of the day, if you like it or don't like it, that's all that matters. But these reviewers are using a platform to base these movies---editing, picture, storytelling, mood, sound and so on. Many people on here will say that the average moviegoer does not notice these things...so reviewers should be more in touch with the average audience. However, the average audience might be okay with an average movie....but they do in fact notice a great movie. A great movie is felt... you might not understand why the movie is so great...but greatness is felt. For example, take classics that most people agree on...and even those who don't particular love it can admit to it's appeal. That sort of film does not happen by accident...it takes a lot of planning and great execution...so it would not be fair to those filmmakers if reviewers did not hold a standard. That being said...I get that some movies are just popcorn movies (although Harry Potter at no time should of been that)...I love a great deal of my blockbuster popcorn movies without the need to read some great review on them because those are my guilty pleasures. Think of it like this, if you decide you're going to make a profession in whatever field...whether it be a doctor, event planner, banker and so on, you're going to be judged based on a standard and that is exactly how it is with filmmaking. If you don't like it, just don't read them. I personally love to read reviews but if I've made plans to watch a movie, I'm going to go see that movie no matter what---and if I love a movie, I'm going to keep loving that movie no matter what.

Why, oh why, oh fatherfucking why, must every pre-teen see a review of a movie they like, which doesn't agree with their childish views and then proceed to flame it with badly thought out insults and retarded reasons why the review is wrong? It's all opinions - He's entitled to his opinion just as much as you are. For the record, i didn't love the movie, but it was certainly worth the effort to go see it, and worth the money paid to watch it - and really wasn't half bad, if a bit drawn out...
Dec 18 - 04:19 PM
Why do you come to the conclusion that we are all children. That's just ignorant. Most of us 'flame' these rotten reviews because we hate when a critic posts a sad excuse of a review just to bring the movie down. You can't sit there and d believe he was even being fair to the film.
