Yates Plans Harry Potter VI: Half Blood Prince
by Fred Topel | July 19, 2007
Blog Article | Discuss Article
Summary

David Yates has just finished Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix but he's already planning the sixth film, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. Where Order is an intense film about teenage feelings of isolation, Prince will go to the next level of teenage years. Back to Article

In other words, we can expect a lot more "snogging" on the next film.

lol, yeah I live in the UK and snogging is by far my favorite Britishism. They also call it copping off and getting your kit off. Those are for sex though. It really is a different language. Apparently a lot of Brits were shocked they allowed pisspot to stay in the film. Apparently that's a bad word here like fanny.

There sure are a lot of naysayers here. Potter 5 was the only one I really liked, other than the third film. I only read up to book 5 so I don't really know what's going on in the series right now.

How hilarious would a sex scene be? Harry takes out his wand and says "avara rigidiro!".

Anyway, I'm looking forward to the next one with Yates at the helm. There are a lot of other directors who would make a great Potter movie. Del Toro comes to mind.
That is, without the drugs.
And the sex. And the rock and roll.

Since all adaptations have been pretty faithful to the books up till now, I can't imagine they'd start to invent scenes that aren't in the book. From what I can remember about part 6 there's Harry snogging Ginny once and that's it.

Anyway, the PG-rating (mandatory for every director because of the young audience) for this series would make it rather impossible. I have no clue where Yates is getting all this from; he should resign from the series anyway, the next book is tailormade for Cuaron, he did the best one of the series so far. But he won't get it because Rowling didn't like him...

As for rock and roll, the addition of that guy from Suede in part four was a good find.

Ebert didn't ask for a kiddy film, he just asked for the magic to be brought back.
Yates took out almost all of the little things that had made the past films so great, and it lost some of its magic. The whole movie felt almost cramped, with a tiny cast, and too little time spent on anyone but Harry. Hopefully he learns from his mistakes, and his next film won't be the LOWEST RATED film in the bunch .

Other than recasting Ginny is there anyway you think that they would write the relationship between the two out of the next film? After all, she doesn't look to be aging as fast as Harry and I do believe Harry might be sent to Azkaban for that one if you know what I mean.

I agree that the movie felt cramped, although it seemed to me that it was trimmed a bit much in editing. But it was still a great ride, and much better than the previous film.

Ebert's a decent reviewer, but he has strange opinions sometimes. It's like he finds one weird reason to like or dislike a movie, and then he focuses only on that. It's like it clouds his ability to fairly judge the film.

Does he not understand that as you get older, the "magic" does disappear? The world does get darker as you age.

It's alright they have a bit of time before filming and she's hitting that age where most little girls start to grow up very quickly. Watch PoA and GoF and look how much Emma Watson has grown. Plus I think the little girl they have playing Ginny has done a bang up job so far even though they've seriously reduced her part. What she does she does well.

Wow.

Let's see: Harry and Hermione have a casual date when they suddenly start making out and find themselves naked in bed. Next morning, that freaky newspaper girl publishes an article and the Ministry of Magic kicks Harry and Hermione out. On the Hogwarts Express home, the train crashes and they die. Interesting way to end book 7, eh?

He probably had the hardest movie to make given the relatively ponderous source material. Unfortunately, Book 6 has similar pacing... That'll be the nice thing about 7... the pacing will be necessarily quickened so that she can wrap up everything.

What they need to do, in my humble opinion, is bring back Dave McKean as lead art director! He%u2019s the reason Prisoner went so dark! (Which certainly set the tone from there on out- order was not nearly dark enough or scary at all for that matter) He drew the marauders map! He is one of my favorite artists and I hope that he gets the chance to work on some of these next films! Oh, if you are not familiar with him, check out Mirror mask, or any of the Sandman comic cover illustrations.

the pacing in every movie since chamber of secrets has been terrible. too much information packed into 2 1/2 hours. the end of goblet of fire was butchered, but not nearly to the extent order of the phoenix was. they lobbed off parts of subplots that made them relevant to the overall plot, thus rendering the subplots irrelevant.

All I know after reading them all and following it for years, is that there is no reason to make it less then 2 or 2.5 hours long. The books are long enough, and there is more then enough in the books to reproduce on film. While Yates can be commended for taking on a hit after others have succeeded, and was able to pull it off, he also let down a large portion of hard-core fans. They should not be worried about keeping them short or cutting things out just because they were not built up on others, or they do not see them to be important. I could guarantee that it would still be a box office smash if it was 3 hours long, look at other book-turned-movie releases, Lord of the Rings for example.

I am in 100% agreement that Order of the Phoenix was a terrible film. Let's not even worry about all the stuff they left out (which is about 70% of the book). This film lacked continuity to the previous 4. None of the locations looked the same. Even Sirius in the fire was completely different from the last film, and I don't even want to talk about how the dementors were different. The new characters were seriously under developed, and some of the scenes didn't even take place in the book. The new screen writer did an absolute horrible job of writing this film. I hope Steve Kloves comes back as the screen writer for HBP. He did the screen play for the first 4 films, and even though there were differences from the books, they were no where NEAR the complete butchering this film was. HBP is my favorite book of the series, and I'm not even sure I want to go see the film considering the disaster this one was. Yates and Goldenberg missed the mark on this one.....BIG time!
