Movie Info

Edward R. Murrow is largely responsible for the cult of personality surrounding modern news anchors, establishing the position through the sheer force of his own personality. Aware of his own status, Murrow often took it upon himself to find and present news he thought important, including this look at the harsh world of migrant farm workers, picking their way from Indiana to Florida in the wake of the crops. ~ Rob Ferrier, Rovi

Audience Reviews for Harvest of Shame

I saw the original broadcast when I was a young teen, maybe 14 years old. It had a major impact on what I would read and my social attitudes. This, along with books like "grapes of Wrath" by John Steinbeck helped me develop into a person with a social conscience during my formative years. I watched it again recently for a paper I am doing on investigative journalism in college (I back in school in retirement).
This is the kind of documentary every American should be exposed to. Nowadays you'll only find such things on Frontline and other such documentary outlets with a much smaller audience than CBS News had in the 1960's.

Released in 1961 right before Thanksgiving, Harvest of Shame is still poignant to the way field workers are viewed and treated. As Thanksgiving approaches this year, give thanks for family and friends, and the ones that work to bring you the cheap food to put on your table. And if possible, give back.
