Hat Box Mystery (1947)
My Rating
Movie Info
In early 1947, Screen Guild Productions experimented with a new format: a 90-minute double feature package, consisting of two simultaneously-filmed 45-minute mysteries. As it turned out, The Hat Box Mystery and The Case of the Baby Sitter were released separately, within two weeks of one another. Both films starred Tom Neal as a private detective named Russ and Pamela Blake as his secretary Susan, both were cowritten by Carl K. Hittelman, and both were directed by the prolific Lambert Hillyer.

A snappy murder mystery story with many shortcomings.

"The Hat Box Mystery" is a simple-minded who-dunnit that fails as both a comedy and a mystery. The leads (Neal and Jenkins) are really too good for this film, which has virtually nothing to recommend it.
The ONLY interesting this about the film is the way the actors intorduce themselves and their characters at the beginning of the film. It's an interesting device, and I don't think it's ever been done quite the same way before or since.
