Average Rating:5.4/10

Consensus: The over-the-top gore, campy acting, and dim cinematography may be part of Hatchet's self-described old-school ethos, but irony alone can't sustain a horror film.

Rated: R [See Full Rating] for strong bloody horror violence, sexual content, nudity and language.

Runtime: 1 hr 33 mins

Genre: Horror/Suspense

Theatrical Release:Sep 7, 2007 Limited

From that point on, the genre became populated with slick studio productions starring the latest round of teen television stars, while gore and terror all but disappeared. HATCHET director Adam green clearly longs for the early days of the VCR, when films like MADMAN (1982), THE BURNING (1981), and THE PROWLER (1981) gave us psycho killers with grudges, deformities, and axes to grind—usually very graphically against the heads of promiscuous teens. HATCHET's killer is Victor Crowley, a grossly misshapen New Orleans bayou boogeyman who suffered an accidental hatchet to the face when his father tried to rescue him from a fire. When brokenhearted college boy Ben (Joel Moore) ditches his friends during a pre-Katrina Mardi Gras in favor of a cheesy Haunted Swamp tour, he finds himself on a boat full of misfits with an inexperienced tour guide (Perry Shen) just in from Detroit. Soon, the boat is sinking, and the passengers who also include an aspiring porn director and his two stars, a middle-aged couple, and a young woman with a vendetta against Crowley--come face-to-face with the monstrous killer. Green clearly isn't against mixing humor in with his scares---HATCHET is rather liberal with laughs and has a generally lighthearted tone. But when the gore comes in, it's strong and noxious---though usually very dimly lit, this is messy stuff. He also shows his appreciation for horror film history by giving cameos to Robert "Freddy Krueger" Englund and Tony "Candyman" Todd and casting Kane "Jason Voorhees" Hodder as Crowley. HATCHET is a lively, funny, and reverent 1980's-style gore film that is certain to get a roomful of gorehounds howling with approval. [More]

It's spirited, totally exploitative, entirely forgettable high body count slasher movie fun, and it sure ain't pretending to be quality cinema.

Green's self-aware comedy works quite well, and builds up to a gory mess that I quite enjoyed. It may not be the second coming of the slasher flick, but it works...

For any self-respecting horror fan, Hatchet is an amusing, spooky, visceral, smartly-crafted breath of fresh air.

Even after appropriately lowering expectations, it's kind to call this one a cut below.

Taken ironically, this is a fun movie. But do be sure to lower your standards at the door.

Green -- like John Carpenter, Wes Craven and the get-it-done directors he obviously admires -- is smart enough to ratchet up the horror in Hatchet to a level that should satisfy party-hard gore hounds and casual tourists alike.

In its gore, Hatchet is not especially inventive

No other film in recent memory has featured such a terrifically retro maniac or revisited the heyday of Eighties gore films with such gleeful, moist abandon.

Hatchet isn't funny, it certainly isn't frightening, and Will Barratt's absurdly murky cinematography hurts the gore money shots.

Marks the arrival of a very interesting new talent on the scene, one that feels inspired by the grindhouse horror genre and tired of the self-seriousness of the torture trend.

It's Itchy-and-Scratchy outlandish, not 'torture porn' scuzzy; it's a classic KISS concert, not a GG Allin bootleg.

For die-hard fans of horror, Hatchet might feel like a reprieve, but it certainly isn't a healthy one.

High expectations and any discerning taste should be thrown out the window for a film of Hatchet's budget. That accomplished, audiences will find a gem of an intentionally bad movie.

So ridiculously over-the-top that it's best viewed as a wacky spoof.

It is an expertly executed slasher film done by someone who genuinely loves the genre and if you’re a fan you’ll enjoy it.

Hatchet is an unapologetically violent film that makes no compromises and takes no prisoners. It could very well be one of the best horror films of the year.
