Shrouded in fog and mystery, the mansion was once a stately antebellum palace that hosted New Orleans' wealthiest. Now it's the creepy and crumbling home to a love struck 19th century gentleman, 999 ghosts, and a hilarious and hair-raising battle for "home rule." Realtor Jim Evers (EDDIE MURPHY) and his wife and business partner Sara get a call late one night from mansion owner Edward Gracey, who is looking to sell his property. Smelling the biggest deal of their career, Jim, Sara and their two children pay a visit to the mansion, located on a remote bayou.A torrential thunderstorm of mysterious origin strands the Evers family in the old mansion with the brooding, eccentric Gracey, his mysterious butler Ramsley, and a variety of residents both seen and unseen. At first, Jim scoffs at Gracey's stories about ghosts and hauntings, until he unearths the mystery of the mansion and finds that his wife Sara has unexpected connections to its haunted past. THE HAUNTED MANSION is directed by Rob Minkoff ("The Lion King," "Stuart Little") and features stunning special effects and make-up design by six-time Academy Award® winner Rick Baker ("An American Werewolf in London," "Men in Black," "The Nutty Professor," "How the Grinch Stole Christmas"), visual effects by Sony Pictures Imageworks, Inc., and sets by Oscar®-winning production designer John Myhre ("Elizabeth," "X-Men," "Chicago"). -- © Disney Pictures [More]

A funereally paced downer.

The film equivalent of the dark, boring period on a haunted house ride before the gondola crashes into another room filled with dirty mirrors.

An efficient, reasonably enjoyable factory product that should scare a 9-year-old just enough and be gone from his or her memory by dinnertime.

About as much fun as a day at Disneyland -- when it's raining and all the rides are broken and the car is at the extreme other end of the parking lot.

Although The Haunted Mansion starts promisingly and presents a wealth of possibilities, filmmakers decide to go the formulaic route to bring in the kiddies.

Although the ads make it sound like Zombie Day Care, Disney’s $90 million thriller-comedy is not necessarily the right film to take your kids to this weekend.

The Haunted Mansion, is a good reason for skeptics of the "theme park ride as movie" concept to be skeptical.

...plays like a contest between Eddie Murphy's popping eyes and his gaping mouth: Which one can more forcefully convey fright?

It's hard to get excited about watching a real estate deal go down, even if it is with a bunch of ghosts.

The special effects display is so lacking in imagination it turns into so much noise, just a flashy distraction from the stiff, stock cliches of the by-the-numbers script.

Makes things look good and whips up a heck of a chase scene [but] misses the emotional foundation, the single essential element of any movie

The latest Eddie Murphy flick is more like the amusement park ride than Disney probably intended: it’s fun for kids, but for the rest of us it’s a bit of a bore.
