Child singer Bobby Breen stars in this strange mixture of music and suspense as Billy Coulter, a shoeshine boy who stows away on a Honolulu bound ship with his pal Pua (Pua Lani). While aboard they stay out of trouble by performing various musical numbers with the help of their pal, Strings (Ned Sparks). Once on the island there's more songs and suspense as the lads become involved in recovering some stolen military secrets from a mysterious spy (William Harrigan). Breen was just eleven years old when he starred in this, his fifth film. He was a fairly big box office draw at the time, and his sweet soprano voice is well utilized in numerous Hawaiian love songs, including the title track and "Down Where the Trade Winds Blow." Director Eddie Cline brings some deft comedic touches, but mostly lets the boy do his thing, and the result is a fascinating time capsule. [More]
