This is an excellent film that took me by surprise. Not a musical nor a spectacle, a hard-hitting drama that is well written and well acted. Not what you expect from Indian movies.

In the light of the Supreme Court granting bail to Binayak Sen, who had been arrested for possession of Naxal literature, I would recommend everyone who can appreciate a well made movie to watch 'Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa'.
A hard hitting drama about the Naxal movement in West Bengal in the 1970s and how a young man gets drawn towards it. Power house performance by Jaya Bachchan as the pain stricken but resolute mother, Sujata Chatterjee. Joy Sengupta puts in a commendable act of the angst driven, ideologically articulate but dynamic youth, Brati Chatterjee. Definitely one of those special movies for me, which I couldn't take my eyes off. Must watch. And do try and appreciate every little thing this movie has to offer. 4/5.
