For a guy who seems so intransigent in television interviews, Spike Lee is remarkably adept at exploring all the facets of a difficult issue

Consensus: Though not without its flaws, He Got Game finds Spike Lee at or near the top of his late-period game, combining trenchant commentary with his signature visuals and a strong performance from Denzel Washington.

Spike Lee turns his attention to the high-stakes world of basketball with this charged drama. Jake Shuttlesworth (Denzel Washington) is serving 15 years for playing a role in the death of his wife. His son, Jesus (Ray Allen), is the best high school basketball player in the country. One week before Jesus must sign a letter of intent to the college of his choice, Jake is granted a temporary reprieve. The catch is that the state's governor wants the prodigy to go to his alma mater and is willing to consider commuting Jake's sentence if he can persuade Jesus to go there. When the time comes for Jesus to make a decision, both father and son are forced to confront their past and present actions--as a role reversal has taken place during Jake's time in prison that sparks a heated confrontation on the basketball court. Lee's unusual choice to use the music of Aaron Copland, an American classical composer, for the soundtrack and his concept of pairing it with the national sport of basketball is a contrast that is made even more striking by the other contributing artists, notably the insistent urban sound provided by Public Enemy. Reviews for He Got Game
Only a director as good as Spike Lee could make a coherent movie out of this messy, jejune set-up ...
Sometimes brilliantly on target, sometimes way off, but never afraid to take the big shots that safer, more risk-averse filmmakers pass off when the artistic stakes are high.
Milwaukee Bucks guard Ray Allen delivers nothing less than the best performance ever put on film by a pro athlete.
Lee's attack on how big business is not only ruining the game he loves but also playing with people's lives is direct and brave, while his passion, insight and intelligence are evident and admirable.
As usual, Lee tries many kinds of stylistic effects and uses wall-to-wall music (by Aaron Copland and Public Enemy); what’s different this time is how personally driven the story feels.
This stands with the most exciting pictures Lee has made since Do the Right Thing established him as one of the screen's most inventive young artists.
As a Spike Lee movie it is a little disappointing. It's not among his best work, but neither is it down among his worst.
The final image, Jake Shuttlesworth's coming full circle in his relationship with Jesus, is priceless.
Shrewdly exposes the underbelly of college recruiting and the pressures exerted on talented high school basketball stars.
The wildly uneven script includes both disciplined, lively riffs and amateurishly artificial exchanges.
Though [Lee] should have drawn up a tighter game plan instead of showboating, but his hoops hoopla still has enough game (mostly in the form of Washington) for a win.
After a couple of seriously worrying missteps, Lee is back at the top of his game, positioning himself as one of the best American filmmakers of his day.
