As Jesus, Ray Allen gives a better performance than one would expect from a professional athlete.

Consensus: Though not without its flaws, He Got Game finds Spike Lee at or near the top of his late-period game, combining trenchant commentary with his signature visuals and a strong performance from Denzel Washington.

Spike Lee turns his attention to the high-stakes world of basketball with this charged drama. Jake Shuttlesworth (Denzel Washington) is serving 15 years for playing a role in the death of his wife. His son, Jesus (Ray Allen), is the best high school basketball player in the country. One week before Jesus must sign a letter of intent to the college of his choice, Jake is granted a temporary reprieve. The catch is that the state's governor wants the prodigy to go to his alma mater and is willing to consider commuting Jake's sentence if he can persuade Jesus to go there. When the time comes for Jesus to make a decision, both father and son are forced to confront their past and present actions--as a role reversal has taken place during Jake's time in prison that sparks a heated confrontation on the basketball court. Lee's unusual choice to use the music of Aaron Copland, an American classical composer, for the soundtrack and his concept of pairing it with the national sport of basketball is a contrast that is made even more striking by the other contributing artists, notably the insistent urban sound provided by Public Enemy. Reviews for He Got Game
Washington is so consistently effective an actor that it hardly needs be said that his excellent performance as the beleaguered Jake carries the film.
Though [Lee] should have drawn up a tighter game plan instead of showboating, but his hoops hoopla still has enough game (mostly in the form of Washington) for a win.
After a couple of seriously worrying missteps, Lee is back at the top of his game, positioning himself as one of the best American filmmakers of his day.
Spike Lee frames the playground basketball sequences with energy and style.
Despite this apparent formalism through the majority of the film, He Got Game still contains a strong emotional power near the climax, when Lee finally lets up on the effects.
For a guy who seems so intransigent in television interviews, Spike Lee is remarkably adept at exploring all the facets of a difficult issue
The most effective moments are small, when Lee lets his fine actors do their work without all the (movie) business.
The movie is a volatile combination of ambitious mythmaking and nasty reality, and like most of Spike Lee's work, it is also an inextricable combination of good and bad.
This stands with the most exciting pictures Lee has made since Do the Right Thing established him as one of the screen's most inventive young artists.
Despite its problems, He Got Game has tremendous style and a fair amount of substance. Not enough to make the film a classic, but more than enough to warrant a viewing.
He Got Game is a little too sappy to be a great movie, but it puts the ball in the hole.
The final image, Jake Shuttlesworth's coming full circle in his relationship with Jesus, is priceless.
Lee may never have the narrow focus to sustain a film on storytelling alone, and he may never need it. What he has here is an explosion of spectacular gambits and a great high-concept hook.
Milwaukee Bucks guard Ray Allen delivers nothing less than the best performance ever put on film by a pro athlete.
