But its whimsy is short-lived and fades quickly to concentrate on the dark underbelly of relationships, emotional attachment, and the complexity of the human spirit. Audrey Tautou delivers a beguiling performance as Angelique, a lovely and passionate young art student. Having just received a grant to work on a series of new paintings, she rushes through her days busily working while always finding time to send secret gifts to her lover, Loic (Samuel Le Bihan). Loic is a successful cardiologist who is older and busier than Angelique. But that does not deter her dedication to him, or sway her to consider dating a classmate who says he's in love with her. Halfway through the film, writer-director Laetitia Colombani employs a narrative technique that changes everything, bringing a chilling flip side to the story. A creative and colorful work, with excellent supporting roles played by Isabelle Carre and Clement Sibony, HE LOVES ME, HE LOVES ME NOT is poised to pounce as a new entry in the romantic thriller genre. Reviews for He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not
Those expecting another Amelie fairy tale from French gamine Audrey Tautou are in for a wicked surprise.
As for Ms. Tautou, she demonstrates that she's much, much more than just another pretty face. You may love her or you may hate her, but you will never be bored by her.
[Take] madness — mixed with inspiration from watching The Sixth Sense. Add a touch of Mulholland Drive and a bag of heart-shaped jujubees, and you’ll just about have the flavor of He Loves Me.
Colombani deceives and manipulates viewers with a veteran's verve, but we never feel cheated.
The movie jumps from romantic comedy to psychological thriller to mystery in a 'heartbeat'...I was engrossed every step of the way.
A great deal of the fun of the movie has to do with the casting of Tatou in a role that is more complicated than her heart-shaped face, Bambi eyes and Amelie goodwill might lead you to expect.
A story of love and obsession that makes for an intriguing cinematic experience on Valentine's or any other day.
The film is deft, delicious work, but a very different romantic fantasy than you probably expect.
Slickly enjoyable little number, which cannily plays off the ingénue image of Amélie's Audrey Tautou.
May work better as a cinematic puzzle than as a pure thriller, but it still makes for an enjoyable ride.
Tatou still inhabits the role of an annoying woman but the Rashomon feature affords heft for this film.
Colombani and her cast remind us that the best thrillers are built upon superb writing and strong acting.
